Rhonda Byrne has said that “The Secret” was inspired by “The Science of Getting Rich.”  That is a great book, and I love it – but the opeing scenes of the movie tells a different story and I wonder why.

The book that Byrne pulls out of the trunk in The Secret begins like this…

The World’s Greatest Discovery

A chapter title that is not from The Science of Getting Rich and a quote from Edgar Guest, that great poet.

This is not how The Science of Getting Rich begins but rather how Robert Collier’s The Secret of The Ages begins.

The scene goes by quickly but if you advance your DVD playback slowly, you can see it as in the screen capture above and in the Rhonda Byrne video clip at the end of this article.

Both of these books are great books and both have a similar message.  We have audio of chapter 11 (The Law of Attraction) of Collier’s book on this site.

Interesting is that Collier is listed in the part of of The Secret’s website called “Behind The Secret” but Wattles is not.  However you can get an ebook of “The Science of Getting Rich” but not of “The Secret of The Ages” on The Secret website.  In Byrne’s Recommended Reading List we find The Science of Getting Rich (and many other success classics) but not The Secret of The Ages.

This is only an observation, not any great controversy.  The messages of both books are congruent and both carry the same great message of the law of attraction.

The Science of Getting Rich is all about the law of attraction, but never calls it that, Collier’s book, The Secret of The Ages is likewise about the LOA and it even has a chapter by that name.

So I invite you to choose your success, watch The Secret and read The Science of Getting Rich or The Secret of The Ages…  Perhaps you’ll even double down and take both of these classics to heart.

My grandfather, Robert Collier, died in 1950, two years before I was born. He was a tremendous businessman, a pioneer in the mail order sales business, and wrote “The Robert Collier Letter Book” on business correspondence.Robert Collier also had a strong spiritual side and in the late 1920s wrote some of the first self-help books, including one called “Secret of the Ages.”

The Science of Getting Rich is a success book written by Wallace D. Wattles in 1910. It is considered a “philosophy of Mental Science or Mind Science.”  It is widely credited as preceding the New Thought Movement.

The Secret Law Of Attraction And The Science Of Getting Rich

The Science of Getting Rich preceded other financial success works such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Rhonda Byrne described the The Science of Getting Rich as the basis for her movie, The Secret, as well as the book by the same name.

Today is Sunday, a day of renewal, a day of beginnings and a day for a fresh look at The Science of Getting Rich.

There is no limit to the supply of Formless Stuff, or Original Substance. The universe is made out of it; but it was not all used in making the universe. The spaces in, through, and between the forms of the visible universe are permeated and filled with the Original Substance; with the formless Stuff; with the raw material of all things. Ten thousand times as much as has been made might still be made, and even then we should not have exhausted the supply of universal raw material.

If you watch the news regularly, if you are out of work, or under-employed it is easy to see a world of lack around you.  It is easy to see the circumstances and let them control what you are thinking.  To let the circumstance spiral your state of mind down.

Emerson says: “God enters by a private door into every individual.”

Wattles teaches that the supply is limitless.  He is not alone in this teaching, if you are Christian or Jew your Bible says: “Before you call I will answer…”  That says your answer is here, you just need receive it.  If you are Muslim your Holy book says: “Which of your Lords blessings would you deny…”  I’ve always found that profound.  I have no experience with Hindu or other religions scriptures but I am certain that they too contain this timeless truth, that your needs are taken care of.

Let me switch for a moment.  Masard Emoto* had got advice from his mother after he nearly drowned in the ocean when he was a young boy, he flailed had around and was sinking and taking water in before his rescue:

…she gave me some advice based on her ability to swim and float in water: “you can float if you just give in,” she said.  She said if I let the water lift me instead of trying to resist it, it would pick me up and carry me.

Emoto talks about this advise coming back to him as he tries to gently flow in the direction he wants his life to take.

Emoto’s mother’s advise is good to think about in challenging times.  When you are in a constant state of struggle and resistance and fighting the circumstances then you are in the same act of resistance that Emoto was in as he was drowning.  You must come from that into a state of trusting.  Trusting that you will be lifted, that you will be carried to safty by the currents of life.

This is not to say that you do nothing, far from it.  The great faiths would have you pray.  And they would have you end the prayer in gratitude.  The stories of faith talk of inspiration and then the recipient of the inspiration acting out of it.  This is not struggle but it is being directed into the flow of life.

Jerry and Ester Hicks, and Abraham talk of going with the flow and not resiting by trying to go up stream.  But if you are constantly fighting and fighting then you are not with the flow and you are not getting the best from life.  When Esther Hicks channels Abraham they are always talking about the best for you being down stream and not where the struggle is.  When you are in harmony you will find your best.

The law of attraction is about these great truths.  Whether you accept any of the faiths mentioned or none, the truths they discuss are real.  So begin to trust, as if you were in water and could not touch bottom, trust that the water would lift you, that it will carry you.

There really is a limitless supply, begin to trust, visualize, collect ideas, take action on them in the spirit of trust.  Whatever the situation, don’t be the drowning man flailing aimlessly reaching for this, then that and never able to connect with any of it.  Trust – see the thing you want to see, hold it in the formless substance, turn it round in your mind.   Allow the ideas to come.  Take steady and thoughtful action.   Per Wattles: by thought the thing is created, by action it is received.

So consider the vision you want.  Consider what it would be like if you could be in that vision, the peace and gratitude.  The law of attraction teaches that you have just created the thing and to receive it you continue to hold the vision and the gratitude and you will get the ideas that will allow you to take the right action to receive it.   You do these things by being in the flow not by being in a constant state of turmoil and unbelief.  Believe….   See yourself and the things you want in the flow of your life.  As you trust and flow and believe these things become a part of your reality.  Your thoughts affect your environment…  this is faith.

*The Secret Life of Water copyright 2005 by Masaru Emoto.  Emoto became well known when his work on the affects of thought and prayer on the formation of water crystals was featured in the film “What The Bleep Do We Know.”  An earlier film about some of the same ideas as “The Secret” and which put forth the ideas of Quantum Physics as an explanation of the law of attraction.

Emerson is one of the writers that Wattles endorses as sharing the philosophies of The Science of Getting Rich. Emerson talks of money’s effects being as beautiful as roses. And being ‘the prose of life’ means money is like ordinary speech, a way of expression. Roses decorate our lives, speech helps us connect with others and Emerson’s statement reflects the same sentiments as Wattles:

In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more. The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power; elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.

If you have the wherewithal to make the most of yourself and your life it not only makes your life more pleasant and meaningful but it lifts those around you. With sufficient means you inspire others to move forward with their lives, for your family you provide stability and will be able to provide education and the things that can help them form in a positive way. When you imbue your life and family with values, with a spirit of all things being possible then as Emerson alludes, moneys effects is as beautiful as roses.

One of the misnomers is that “money is the root of all evil.” This is attributed to the Bible and used to justify failure. In fact the Bible says, “the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10).” Emerson and Wattles are not talking about the love of money but rather of money as a tool for bringing good things to life.

If you consider money as being like an ordinary expression of life then you can appreciate it like good words. Good words lift and inspire but words can also tear down. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use words rather that you should use your words in a beneficial way and leave the words that tear down behind.

The whole discussion of money is not so a man may become the biggest glutton in the world, not to be the biggest consumer, not to be a Jabba the Hutt – fat and controlling, but so he may fully participate in life and produce value — to empower himself and others. Emerson in his lecture on wealth says:

Every man is a consumer, and ought to be a producer. He fails to make his place good in the world, unless he not only pays his debt, but also adds something to the common wealth. Nor can he do justice to his genius, without making some larger demand on the world than a bare subsistence. He is by constitution expensive, and needs to be rich.

And we’ll leave it there for now.

Recently, instead of getting a morning news update, I have been starting my day by listening to The Science of Getting Rich.

With the morning news update I learned everything that was wrong with the world. I started my day focusing on lack and things I have no control over.

By spending my mornings with The Science of Getting Rich I now hear what is right with the world; I start my day with a focus on abundance and on things that are within my control.

This morning, Chapter 11 spoke to me, I’ve embeded it here so you can listen when you are ready:

It is interesting how I notice different things when I listen again. How could I have heard a chapter five times and listened to the words but not really hear them? This morning I heard:

Thought and personel action must be combined … By thought the thing you want is brought to you, by action you receive it … put your whole mind into creative action … act now, there is never any time but now.

Wow — Chapter 11: Acting In A Certain Way has it all, the complete formula. Success coaches talk about integrating the whole person, body, mind, and spirit. That is something that Wattles said in one short chapter of The Science of Getting Rich nearly 100 years ago and he left it as a gift for us today.

Your vision and faith will set the creative force in motion to bring it toward you, and your action will cause the forces in your own environment to move you toward the place you want.

“The Science of Getting Rich” is an interesting book. At one point in my life I would have scoffed past it without paying attention to it’s message. After all the language is somewhat stuffy and the examples are from the turn of the Century but today more powerful examples could be taken than the steel and rail businesses or retail. There are many examples of people from modest means creating companies like Microsoft, Google, and YouTube and making fortunes in practically the wink of an eye. All of that said, you will find no finer discussion of the law of attraction.

Don’t ever wallow in self-pity and think that the last song has been written, that there are no more, or the last industry, or business niche made, or that everything has already been invented. Or likewise that we are running out of oil, copper, gold, or whatever it is. The three software companies mentioned in the last paragraph literally came from sand. There is so much sand. Those industries are based on computer chips which are made from silicon – a principal component in sand. But that’s not quite true either. These companies are software companies. Their products are not physical at all – they are manifestations of the mind – they do not truly exist in the physical world but the fortunes from them do. As you listen to The Science of Getting Rich you will hear Wattles discussing what must have been a stretch to think about in 1910 – an airline industry that people should think about getting into, what insight.

So what are you going to do? See the vision of your life and be thankful that you have it. When the thoughts come act on them. See the vision as big, that way you know it’s from God, or the Universal intelligence, or however you choose to view it. Physics have come up with some good theories about how matter is formed from energy and how thought is energy. Use the model that you feel good about. In reality no one understands exactly what the process is but only that there is a law that attracts those things to us when we hold them in mind and impress them on “The Formless Substance.” Wattles is talking about the law of attraction.

In saying that you must hold your vision while you are doing each act, however trivial or commonplace, I do not mean to say that it is necessary at all times to see the vision distinctly to its smallest details. It should be the work of your leisure hours to use your imagination on the details of your vision, and to contemplate them until they are firmly fixed upon memory. If you wish speedy results, spend practically all your spare time in this practice.

By continuous contemplation you will get the picture of what you want, even to the smallest details, so firmly fixed upon your mind, and so completely transferred to the mind of Formless Substance, that in your working hours you need only to mentally refer to the picture to stimulate your faith and purpose, and cause your best effort to be put forth. Contemplate your picture in your leisure hours until your consciousness is so full of it that you can grasp it instantly. You will become so enthused with its bright promises that the mere thought of it will call forth the strongest energies of your whole being.

Wallace Wattles was one of the first to write about what is known today as The Law of Attraction.  More recently the idea was featured in the move ‘The Secret’ which itself was taken from Wallace Wattles book as well as being inspired by The Teachings of Abraham from Jerry and Ester Hicks.

You have been learning about your thoughts impressing the vision on the thinking substance and becoming like a magnet attracting the thing that you want. Then you must act. The substance will reveal itself and you will know the actions to take and you must take them.

There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.

A thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.

In order to do this, man must pass from the competitive to the creative mind; he must form a clear mental picture of the things he wants, and hold this picture in his thoughts with the fixed PURPOSE to get what he wants, and the unwavering FAITH that he does get what he wants, closing his mind to all that may tend to shake his purpose, dim his vision, or quench his faith.

That he may receive what he wants when it comes, man must act NOW upon the people and things in his present environment.
