Napoleon Hill and Wallace Wattles

Napoleon Hill ends the author’s preface of Think and Grow Rich with the idea above.  Why?

Wallace Wattles in Chapter 11 of  The Science of Getting Rich says:

“By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it.”

If you read Think and Grow Rich you will find a system of cultivating the idea until it becomes a white hot desire and you begin to act on it.

If you read The Science of Getting Rich, likewise you will find techniques to enhance your desire for the idea until you begin to act on it.

What do you do or don’t do with your idea is what causes most people to fail.  How do you nourish the idea and make it come alive, how do you get it to bring the results you want into your life?

Along the way, the desire creates an awareness of things around you that are related to the idea.  This will be things you see, ideas you notice, and other manifestations.  The bottom line is you are noticing and attracting this information.  If you don’t discount it, if you respect your own thoughts and desires – then you will automatically begin to act on it to produce a result.

Unless you are sleepwalking through life you will begin to compare what you are seeing with your new sensitivity to where you are and where you want to go.  This will cause other ideas and other observations and you must pick and choose your way through to your goal.  Some of the ideas will tell you to give up, maybe they’ll tell you to go to the casino and bet your capital – these are the weeds that you must root out of your thinking.  The other ideas, the ones congruent with your desire you continue to cultivate.

So how do you weed out an idea and how do you cultivate one?

Ideas that you want to keep and cultivate you need to write down and review.  Then begin to weave them into your vision, see how they fit in to the direction you want to go and continue with them.  Notice that if they are good ideas but are not with your desired end you should just write them down for possible use later.

Ideas that you don’t want, thoughts such as: “this is a waste of time” you must cast down.  The best way I have found to do this is to just replace them with another thought.  This is a place where some quotes you may know will be useful.

When you find a counter-productive thought replace it.   The thought response to “this is not good enough” might be “I’d rather see a crooked furrow than an un-plowed field.”  After all if this is some new thing you are doing you are not out of the box going to be doing it as well as those who have been in the field for years.  The important thing is to begin, to get something going.

The often given example of if your young child tries to walk for the first time and falls down do you declare, “he’ll never walk” and then buy him a wheel chair.  No, you cheer his effort, you encourage him, and help him whenever he wants to try.  So he tries more and everyday he gets better and better.  It will be the same with you and the thing you are trying to do.

“I’d rather see a crooked furrow than a field un-plowed” -  I’d rather see my child try to walk than just crawl around for his whole life.

Trying leads to the first unstable steps and those lead to walking across from mommy to daddy which leads to running around the house and having the fun of great motion never before possible for that child – and his world opens a little more.

Your trying leads to successful action and the new things you can see from this new range of motion that you have achieved and your world opens a little more.

Your issue in getting to your desired end comes with being shut down by your thoughts.  The same mind that thought the thoughts to get you going can shut you down unless you are cultivating your thoughts all the time.

Norman Vincent Peale

Norman Vincent Peale in “The Power of Positive Thinking” goes deeply into the idea of cultivating your thoughts.  Putting good thoughts in and replacing the dis-empowering thoughts with good ones.  Many may have passed up Peale’s books because of their religious roots.  This is a mistake.  Peale teaches when the bad thoughts come replace with a thought you have ready.  Discouraging thoughts can be replace with: “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”  A Bible quote and if you are a believer a good one to use.  If you are not a believer then find something to encourage you that you can substitute.  Peale himself says that the ideas that he presents in his books will work for Christians and non-Christians alike.  It is The Power of Positive Thinking.

If we cultivate our thoughts this way we can have a huge success crop.  If we fail to do that we just may find ourselves gleaning the left overs in another mans field.

Peale also has a book about visualization, Positive Imaging, which is a gem.  Like Hill and Wattles, Peale teaches you to see your desired results without shooting it down with negative thoughts.  See the vision and cultivate the thoughts it generates.  Then become inspired to action because you will receive actionable ideas.

And so it goes, these are timeless mental technologies that will work for you.  The thing is recognize where your thoughts are coming from and pick the ones with your desired outcome.  Cultivate the thoughts that come with the visions and begin to take action.  Each action will raise you a little higher and you will see a little farther.

See your vision as if it is here now.  Feel the feelings that you will feel when it is real.  Cultivate your thoughts – think the thoughts that serve you.  This will help keep the desire hot until by your actions you receive it.

Just do it, so went the Nike commercials and it was some of the best advice that anyone could get.

We plan and perfect and find reasons to wait and the thing never gets done.  I recall a presentation by the great speaker Les Brown, he talks about the dreams that are buried in the graveyard.  Dreams that the dreamers just never got around to.  Years and years go by and people dream of that book or that business they wanted to start:  but what happens?

The time is not right, I just need to get these pieces in place, and the list keeps going on and on.  When something is satisfied another piece is added.  Soon there is so much burden and overhead that the thing is never done.  It lessens the person it takes a little piece out of his soul.

The thing is you have to get yourself right.  Sometimes some life changing event will happen and force change on us but the natural way to accomplish is to program your self for it.

This is why The Science of Getting Rich puts so much emphases on visualization: seeing your results now.  Your mind is powerful and the visualization of either good or bad things causes it to trigger these powerful mechanisms.  SGR also teaches a spiritual component that causes the object of the visualization to be formed then in the “thinking substance.”  Today’s thought explains the process by quantum physics, in fact there is a whole movie about it called: “What If.”

See yourself doing it, ideas will come, take action.  Continue to visualize – look into the future and see your success, then get more ideas, take more action, visualize more and repeat.  It’s good to write these things down, keep a journal of your visualization and what you are seeking, of the ideas that come, and of the action you have taken.   Review the journal and use it to help with your visualization.

Les Brown says the biggest dreams are in the graveyards.  Don’t let yours end up there some day.

I would argue that this is the law of attraction manifest in a big-big way. It is what Wallace Wattles writes about in The Science of Getting Rich, from Chapter 11 – Acting In The Certain Way:

By thought you can cause the gold in the hearts of the mountains to be impelled toward you; but it will not mine itself, refine itself, coin itself into double eagles, and come rolling along the roads seeking its way into your pocket.

Under the impelling power of the Supreme Spirit, men’s affairs will be so ordered that some one will be led to mine the gold for you; other men’s business transactions will be so directed that the gold will be brought toward you, and you must so arrange your own business affairs that you may be able to receive it when it comes to you. Your thought makes all things, animate and inanimate, work to bring you what you want; but your personal activity must be such that you can rightly receive what you want when it reaches you.

I can envision that Susan Boyle’s dream had something to do with “Britan’s Got Talent” becoming a successful program so that she could have the opportunity that she clearly deserves.

Can you believe that about The Law of Attraction? That “under the impelling power of the Supreme Spirit, men’s affairs will be so ordered…” that other peoples business transactions were directed such that “Britain’s Got Talent” came to be so Susan Boyle could give this great performance and achieve her dream. Can you believe that? Can you believe it for yourself?

The same could be said of an earlier performance by Paul Potts. The same thing, Potts had a dream…

There is no limit to the supply of Formless Stuff, or Original Substance. The universe is made out of it; but it was not all used in making the universe. The spaces in, through, and between the forms of the visible universe are permeated and filled with the Original Substance; with the formless Stuff; with the raw material of all things. Ten thousand times as much as has been made might still be made, and even then we should not have exhausted the supply of universal raw material.

If you watch the news regularly, if you are out of work, or under-employed it is easy to see a world of lack around you.  It is easy to see the circumstances and let them control what you are thinking.  To let the circumstance spiral your state of mind down.

Emerson says: “God enters by a private door into every individual.”

Wattles teaches that the supply is limitless.  He is not alone in this teaching, if you are Christian or Jew your Bible says: “Before you call I will answer…”  That says your answer is here, you just need receive it.  If you are Muslim your Holy book says: “Which of your Lords blessings would you deny…”  I’ve always found that profound.  I have no experience with Hindu or other religions scriptures but I am certain that they too contain this timeless truth, that your needs are taken care of.

Let me switch for a moment.  Masard Emoto* had got advice from his mother after he nearly drowned in the ocean when he was a young boy, he flailed had around and was sinking and taking water in before his rescue:

…she gave me some advice based on her ability to swim and float in water: “you can float if you just give in,” she said.  She said if I let the water lift me instead of trying to resist it, it would pick me up and carry me.

Emoto talks about this advise coming back to him as he tries to gently flow in the direction he wants his life to take.

Emoto’s mother’s advise is good to think about in challenging times.  When you are in a constant state of struggle and resistance and fighting the circumstances then you are in the same act of resistance that Emoto was in as he was drowning.  You must come from that into a state of trusting.  Trusting that you will be lifted, that you will be carried to safty by the currents of life.

This is not to say that you do nothing, far from it.  The great faiths would have you pray.  And they would have you end the prayer in gratitude.  The stories of faith talk of inspiration and then the recipient of the inspiration acting out of it.  This is not struggle but it is being directed into the flow of life.

Jerry and Ester Hicks, and Abraham talk of going with the flow and not resiting by trying to go up stream.  But if you are constantly fighting and fighting then you are not with the flow and you are not getting the best from life.  When Esther Hicks channels Abraham they are always talking about the best for you being down stream and not where the struggle is.  When you are in harmony you will find your best.

The law of attraction is about these great truths.  Whether you accept any of the faiths mentioned or none, the truths they discuss are real.  So begin to trust, as if you were in water and could not touch bottom, trust that the water would lift you, that it will carry you.

There really is a limitless supply, begin to trust, visualize, collect ideas, take action on them in the spirit of trust.  Whatever the situation, don’t be the drowning man flailing aimlessly reaching for this, then that and never able to connect with any of it.  Trust – see the thing you want to see, hold it in the formless substance, turn it round in your mind.   Allow the ideas to come.  Take steady and thoughtful action.   Per Wattles: by thought the thing is created, by action it is received.

So consider the vision you want.  Consider what it would be like if you could be in that vision, the peace and gratitude.  The law of attraction teaches that you have just created the thing and to receive it you continue to hold the vision and the gratitude and you will get the ideas that will allow you to take the right action to receive it.   You do these things by being in the flow not by being in a constant state of turmoil and unbelief.  Believe….   See yourself and the things you want in the flow of your life.  As you trust and flow and believe these things become a part of your reality.  Your thoughts affect your environment…  this is faith.

1. Say to yourself: I love you

2. Say to God: I’m Sorry

3. Say to God: Please forgive me.

4. Say to God: Thank you

Those are the responses, since you have 100% responsibility for everything in your life these responses will change any situation, even with other people. Always use the cleaning process and keep using it until the change comes.

Here is a prayer, quoted from Joe’s book, used by Morrnah Simeona one of the great teachers of Ho’oponopono (mental cleansing) which is the name of the techniques:

Divine creator, father, mother, son as one… If I, my family, relatives, and ancestors have offended you, your family, relatives, and ancestors in thoughts, words, deeds, and actions from the beginning of our creation to the present, we ask your forgiveness… Let this cleanse, purify, release, cut all the negative memories, blocks, energies, and vibrations and transmute these unwanted energies to pure light… And it is done.

With such prayers and feeling the shared experiences while reviewing patient records Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len is said to have cured all patients in the criminally mentally ill wing of a psychiatric hospital in Hawaii.

Ho’oponopono teaches that our thoughts, based on old memories, which we are clearing with the process are blocking inspiration which holds all the answers. When we clear then inspiration can come through. Do you want to live your life on memories or by inspiration?

Our memories bubble up in mind and cause all sorts of problems – real and imagined: clearing old thoughts opens us to inspiration. Forgiveness, thank you, and love are possibly the only ways to get past those thoughts.

Ho’oponopono is an amazing process which I had a hard time accepting until reading Wallace Wattles book The Science of Getting Rich (free audio book is available in the resources sidebar). The Science of Getting Rich can be looked at as a treatise on mastering the law of attraction and perhaps the best teaching out there on the subject. I now see Ho’oponopono as another facet of the beautiful gem that we call the law of attraction.

Put the ideas to work in your life. Accept complete responsibility for your circumstances – sure there are always reasons that things exist but if you believe the law of attraction then accept that your thoughts can affect those things and your awareness gives you responsibility and power.

To “clean” the situation ask forgiveness for it and say “I’m sorry.”

Express gratitude that you are forgiven and for resolution, say thank you.

Say “I love you.” There is not a better expression of gratitude than love. Gratitude is an essential part to using the law of attraction.

Spend some time meditating on the prayer listed above by Morrnah Simeona. There is a great peace to be had in that prayer.

Master the law of attraction, what if you could master it?  Did you know The Science of Getting Rich tells you exactly how to attain mastery?  What would mastery mean to you? The Science of Getting Rich

In 1910 a rather strange man named Wallace D. Wattles wrote what has become a classic success book: The Science of Getting Rich. This book while always getting a little attention through the years has become hugely popular again since the release of The Secret movie. Rhonda Byrne, the creator of the movie has said that The Science of Getting Rich was a major factor in the movie.

The Science of Getting Rich doesn’t use the words: “law of attraction” anywhere in it – yet in reading the book it is unmistakable that the law of attraction is what it is all about. Hold the vision of the thing you want in the invisible thinking substance that makes up the universe. Profound for 1910, today people discussing the law begin to talk about Physics and discoveries in quantum mechanics. We were perhaps better off with the simpler language which is part of the charm of Wattles book.

Master The Law of Attraction

Hold the vision, see the vision and step into it, experience it. At some point you will learn what to do and you must act. Wattles says: “By thought, the thing you want is brought to you. By action, you receive it.” A lot of people leave out the discussion of the action part when talking about the law of attraction. It is nice to think that all you have to do is dream, and your dreams will see reality. The idea of action says you might have to work at it a little bit too.

Yet it is this very “action” that activates the law of attraction and this is a key part of what wattles focuses on in The Science of Getting Rich. It’s all there in that book, laying in the open, and not “Secret” since 1910. BOTH POVERTY AND RICHES ARE THE OFFSPRING OF THOUGHT

Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich stands as the most famous success book of the 20th century. A few weeks back we identified chapters 3 and 4 as pivotal in the book and congruent with “The Science of Getting Rich.” Audio of chapter 3 was published last year and now here is the promised chapter 4.

Napoleon Hill names auto-suggestion as the key-stone of Think And Grow Rich. Auto-suggestion puts instructions from you directly into your subconscious mind and begins a process whereby you will be contacted back by an inspiration from infinite intelligence. An inspiration that will take you to your objective. To the thing which you instructed your subconscious mind to aquire.

Hill recommends reading the chapter every night aloud until you develop faith in the principals it states. Likewise your goal must be repeated and visualized. If you are seeking money you must visualize it until you see, in your mind, the money that you seek. I might add that you can even smell it.

“The Greatest Salesman in The World” by Og Mandino is the first part of Mandino’s success trilogy.  The book is set in Biblical times and although not a Christmas Story – is a Christmas Story.  It is appropriate to read anytime of the year but perhaps now, at Christmas time it has a special meaning.  You don’t have to be in the sales field to gain from this book.  Everyone who needs to be understood and who needs to relay ideas to others will gain from reading this.  Likewise it is not a Christian story – but a story set around some of the characters and circumstances of The Christmas Story but it is completely independant of it.

Christmas Break

This post is going to be short and will be the last before our Christmas break.  We will be picking back up again in the new year.

Here is to your great success in life.  Believe in yourself, you have great things within you.  All of the posts about “The Science of Getting Rich” and “Think and Grow Rich” are all about that.  About the greatness that is built into you, the greatness that you can tap and turn your life into a magical experience.  Life is meant to be enjoyed.

Everything I Really Needed To Know About Life I Learned From My Dog.

I once thought of writing a book called: “Everything I Really Needed To Know About Life I Learned From My Dog.”  I still may – at least an essay.  I watch my dog and he is always happy, he has no remorse for doing things he finds enjoyable, he is always exploring, always on the hunt for the things he needs or wants.  If he does something I don’t like I sometimes yell at him but soon he is back, tail wagging and making up to me.  If he wants something he can’t get himself he finds a way to ask for it.  Even though I don’t speak dog and he doesn’t speak people – he usually gets his idea across. He also notices when those around him are hurting.  Sometimes when I am sad – I get a paw on the shoulder or he’ll come and put his head against me in a very tender way.  If you have a dog perhaps you understand.  If you don’t this might be a stretch.

What does my dog have to do with anything, those are the success skills for life.  Keep a good attitude, explore your world and learn new things about it, do the things you need to do for life (hunting in his case), forgive and let go, care about those around you, and ask if you need help.  These are a pretty good core set of skills for life.

If you are facing challenges

Give another listen to “The Science of Getting Rich.”  I hear different things in it every time through.  Often I let it play in the background as I work and find myself tuning in and out, getting different highlights. I find myself thinking in a better way, getting better ideas, and as a consequence doing better things.

It all starts with a belief in what is possible. The Bible says “all things are possible to him that believeth.” Let your mind be open to the solutions that are there. If we focus on some dire result churning up in our thoughts then we are closed to what might be the real solution. Believe the solution is there and see your self in your world after the solution has taken place. What is your ideal day after the solution. See it and make it real, your actions will follow.

As a final word of preparation, before you begin the first chapter, may I offer one brief suggestion which may provide a clue by which the Carnegie secret may be recognized? It is this–ALL ACHIEVEMENT, ALL EARNED RICHES, HAVE THEIR BEGINNING IN AN IDEA! If you are ready for the secret, you already possess one half of it, therefore, you will readily recognize the other half the moment it reaches your mind.

Something that you can easily pick up in every chapter, and the answer most given as to what the Carnegie Wealth Secret is: “see yourself,” or “visualize. ” See yourself where you want to be even before you are physically there. Napoleon Hill didn’t make it easy, and yet it is there in plain sight.

Did you pick visualization or a different answer? Have you read “Think And Grow Rich” and come away scratching your head, wondering what the secret was?

What we find is even those successful people who give an answer other than visualization, when questioned, do in fact perform visualization related to their goals. All of them picked up the idea of a goals list and of reviewing it regularly. Many of them say the secret is “Written Goals.” Written goals are certainly important, but it’s what they do with that goals list that matters. When they review it they begin to see the completion of those goals in their minds. So without exception each one performs visualization.

Most highly successful people see their success in their minds before they see it in reality. The kind of success might be wealth, love, sports, but always the most successful “see it” first.

Dennis Waitley is the author of “The Seeds of Greatness” and many other books. He is also a success coach who has coached Astronauts for NASA and athletes for the US Olympic teams. He talks about visualization too. He points out that athletes who visualize perform significantly better than those who don’t and that it is measurable. It is something that you can see benefits from very soon. Another way he puts it is, “do within while you’re without.” I love that.

Which brings us back to “The Science of Getting Rich.” Visualization is one of the “big deals” in Wallace Wattles classic.
