Law of Attraction

I keep reading bad information about the law of attraction in forums. The writers talk about holding wishful magical thoughts and then sitting back and waiting for magic to happen. So they claim this is a fraud, that magic doesn’t happen this way. I would agree that simple wishful thinking this way is a fraud but it is not the law of attraction.

The law of attraction calls on you to visualize your result, draw ideas about achieving it from the visualization, and to act on those ideas, and finally to repeat the loop daily. This is far from just thinking happy magical thoughts of things. I think if you consider this that it is actually a solid plan for achievement in any area.

These writers seem to have missed a key point about the law of attraction and the Science of Getting Rich, action is required. This is very clearly stated in the movie “The Secret” and in the book The Science of Getting Rich.

One of my favorite quotes from The Science of Getting Rich is:”By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it.”

By action you receive it, that means doing something not sitting home and thinking happy thoughts. The happy thoughts and the thinking about it using visualization are done to trigger ideas about the action that you need to take to bring the desired result to you.

This process has been used by Denis Waitley to train olympic athletes, this is something he wrote about in his best seller “The psychology of Winning.” Waitley describes the process even though the term “law of attraction” wasn’t in vogue when he wrote the book, still he has all of the steps.

The same is true of the book “The Science of Getting Rich.” This book is a treatise on the law of attraction even though the term is not used even once in the entire book. Still the steps are clearly laid out as the loop that was mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Many deride the law of attraction after never having understood it. They grab onto the idea of happy thoughts and wishful thinking and correctly realize that doing just this doesn’t work. However they have failed to see the complete process of the law of attraction, that you spin ideas off of the visualization, then you act on the ideas. Action, action, action is very clearly called for by all responsible teachers of the law.

Do the steps and repeat daily and soon results will follow. This is the law of attraction.

We always see signs that tells us to “ACT NOW”, “now is your chance to save 20%,” and so many other such advertisements which invade our society. Failing to act now is considered risky. We could miss out on a great opportunity. Well, Wallace D. Wattles wrote in his book, The Science of Getting Richer about the need to act in the moment. How could you expect to ever get rich if you did not act upon your desire to be rich? It was one thing to want it, but an entirely different matter to actually act upon your vision.

Wattles believed that man must act and behave in a certain way to become rich. First he must gain a mental image of being rich, hold it consistently, and detail it to the fullest. However, just visualizing it will only remain a thought. Without personal action, nothing will come of it. Man must take action and perform in accordance with the idea of being rich. In SGR, Wattles used many examples pertaining to business that illustrated his point about immediate action. He stated that if one “engaged in some business, and feel that it is not the right, …, do not wait …to get into the right business before you begin to act.”

He understood man well. While it seems so obvious that time is on its own schedule we still try to control the hands. We focus on the past and worry about the future. He wisely stated that man “cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.”

Believing in your mental image that you know what you want and that you are taking action is the key to becoming rich. Wattles stated that even if you are in an uncomfortable situation, yet are doing everything in your power to move toward your goal, then given time you will reach your purpose. You just must remain steadfast and on course. Keep your purpose fixed and your mental image in tact. While you may feel discouraged because you are not in the right business, remember what want and keep clear of any distractions that may cloud your fixed purpose. The universe will respond in kind.

The Secret

The Secret took only a few years to become the best-selling self-help book of all time, making Rhonda Byrne world famous in the area of personal development. Before the movie and book were released, no one had ever heard of her. But the important thing about this movie was not the person delivering the message, but the message which was delivered by over a dozen of the most well known success coaches in the world. That message was best encapsulated in the statement made by John Asaraf: “You can have anything that you want, I don’t care how big it is.”

Shortly after that, self-made millionaire Bob Proctor introduces ‘The Secret’ as the law of attraction and stated that everything in your life is being attracted into your life as a result of the things you’re thinking about. Whether you’re thinking about what you want or what you don’t want, you’re creating your own reality by virtue of the predominating thoughts in your consciousness.

The purpose of this Review of the Secret is to help you decide for yourself whether or not purchasing and using this movie or any of these materials is worth your time and money.

The Cast and Message of “The Secret”

Probably the most credible thing about The Secret is that some of the greatest minds in personal development decided to take part in it. Among them are: Bob Proctor, author of “You We Born Rich,” Jack Canfield, author the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books, James Arthur Ray, Joe Vitale, John Asaraf and dozens of other people who have demonstrated the power of the law of attraction through the results in their life. All of these people claim that the same secret which has made them successful (the Law of attraction) was used by historical figures like Leonardo Davinci, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Thomas Edison, Einstein, JD Rockefeller, Dale Carnegie and many more.

As incredible as this might sound, all you have to do is study the lives and writing of these historical figures and you’ll find that all of them held one common belief: that we could manipulate the results which we attract into our lives by means of directing our thoughts towards what we want. All of them also believed that there was a connectedness in the universe which caused us to be linked to everything in existence. So by focusing your thoughts on something, you actually tune your mind and body into the same frequency and begin attracting energies which are consistent with what you’re thinking.

Obviously, the list of individuals who held this belief and the things which they accomplished in their lives makes it impossible to ignore the power of the law of attraction and the impact of our thoughts on our lives.

Something to Be Cautious of

Although the principles being taught in the movie ‘The Secret’ are valuable, they don’t tell you the whole story. They simply give you the three steps of: ask, believe and receive. Yet if you study the lives of the great achievers (living and dead), even those who believed in the Law of attraction, you’ll find that all of them have one thing in common. They all committed to the pursuit of the object of their desire with careful planning, constant persistence and a burning desire to get what they want. I don’t see anywhere that this fits into the “ask, believe, receive” instructions which are laid out in this movie.

My guess is that the people who participated in the secret know that there’s a whole lot more to it than that, and that nothing happens unless you invest action and persistence towards achieving it. As long as you keep this in mind, I think The Secret would be a great addition to your library and would help you to keep your thoughts focused on what you want while you’re busy working your plan of action towards achieving it. The Science of Gettting Rich

In the early 1900s, an American writer challenged conventional wisdom and came out with a small book called The Science of Getting Rich. Wallace D. Wallace shook society with his claims.

He began with the simple notion that man” develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich.” Seems simple enough.

Wattles believed that the sole purpose of life is development. Man constantly strives to become the best that he can be. This is why “everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining.”

However, he furthers his philosophy by stating that since man is not satisfied with only making enough money to be content.  Life is meant to be enjoyed in all aspects. Money is used to increase life and all its pleasures. In order to do so, man must have the means to do so. Therefore, Wattles explains, “Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.”

“Living In A Certain Way” Core to The Science of Getting Rich

According to Wattles, man can only become rich if he lives a certain way. If he is rich, only then can he life to its fullest. Only having plenty of money gives a man possibility to achieve his highest potential and talent. His spirit can only reach its highest development when man can afford it. For either to occur, man must utilize many instruments during the process. Money is the means to success in all man’s desires.

In this world, there is no man who is incapable of getting rich. Man always wants more than he already owns. In our extremely complicated world, the average person needs a great deal of wealth live in luxury and reach a sense of fulfillment.

In human nature, we all have inherent notions of wanting to be more. We measure success by their monetary worth and how they reached their pillar of success. The important thing to note is that becoming rich relies what resources you use to become rich. You must buy them so that you can use them as your own. This means you are rich enough to do so. As Wattles illustrates, “To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.”

Think And Grow Rich, Finding The Carnegie Wealth Secret

In the authors preface of “Think And Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill states that the Carnegie Wealth Secret appears at least once in every chapter. It is interesting that different successful people who read the book often come up with different answers of what that secret is. Hill goes on to say:

As a final word of preparation, before you begin the first chapter, may I offer one brief suggestion which may provide a clue by which the Carnegie secret may be recognized? It is this–ALL ACHIEVEMENT, ALL EARNED RICHES, HAVE THEIR BEGINNING IN AN IDEA! If you are ready for the secret, you already possess one half of it, therefore, you will readily recognize the other half the moment it reaches your mind.

Something that you can easily pick up in every chapter, and the answer most given as to what the Carnegie Wealth Secret is: “see yourself,” or “visualize. ” See yourself where you want to be even before you are physically there. Napoleon Hill didn’t make it easy, and yet it is there in plain sight.

Just Where Is The Secret Hidden In Think and Grow Rich

Did you pick visualization or a different answer? Have you read “Think And Grow Rich” and come away scratching your head, wondering what the secret was?

What we find is even those successful people who give an answer other than visualization, when questioned, do in fact perform visualization related to their goals. All of them picked up the idea of a goals list and of reviewing it regularly. Many of them say the secret is “Written Goals.” Written goals are certainly important, but it’s what they do with that goals list that matters. When they review it they begin to see the completion of those goals in their minds. So without exception each one performs visualization.

Most highly successful people see their success in their minds before they see it in reality. The kind of success might be wealth, love, sports, but always the most successful “see it” first.

Dennis Waitley is the author of “The Seeds of Greatness” and many other books. He is also a success coach who has coached Astronauts for NASA and athletes for the US Olympic teams. He talks about visualization too. He points out that athletes who visualize perform significantly better than those who don’t and that it is measurable. It is something that you can see benefits from very soon. Another way he puts it is, “do within while you’re without.” I love that.

Hope and faith are necessary parts of the law of attraction.

True hope is one of the most motivating emotions going for you.  I used the word emotions to describe hope, but there is more to hope than that.  Hope is a real thing not just an emotion.

Hope is not wishing, often people use the word that way but a true understanding and appreciation of the word will bring a power to you that you won’t otherwise have.  Often when people give up they say to themselves “I hope things will get better.”  Here “hope” is used synonymously with “wish.”  Wish carries no power behind it, hope on the other hand in it’s true sense does have power.  I am talking of using hope as a verb where it means to look forward to something with desire and reasonable confidence.

Why should you hope when there is no evidence?  This sounds almost like a subject for church, doesn’t it.  And when taught correctly in church, hope is an active and real force in your life.  Many churches fail to teach the power of such things as hope and faith and wind up putting them in the realm of wishes and fantasy.

We know that Wallace Wattles had a religious background and if you read The Science of Getting Rich you will see this.  But Wattles, correctly, recognizes that hope and faith are not just things for church but are active forces to use in your life.  In the same way that he doesn’t use the words “law of attraction,” he doesn’t push hope and faith and yet the precepts are there in every chapter.

Hope and Faith when used correctly are forces at work in everyone’s life, not just for those who are religious.  These are not religious terms.  Consider:

“That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust (Math 5:45 KJV).

Hope and Faith are the same, just like the sun and rain, they are forces in our lives that work for all, for the just and unjust (whatever you consider just and unjust to mean).

Wattles talks about holding your vision of the thing you want in the formless substance, to see it, to visualize it, to get your emotions into the visions.  This brings you into vibration with the thing (or desired outcome) and attracts it to you.  Your mind will collect data and at some point you will know what to do and then you should act.

This “Law of Attraction” is of the same stuff as described by a proper use of the terms “faith” and “hope.”

Hope, actively hope, and have faith – a calm assurance, that the things you are looking for, that you are holding in the unseen substance are yours and you have received them.  Soon they will catch up to you in the physical world.

Use hope and faith everyday in your life by seeing the things inside that you are creating outside in your world.

There is a great old book called “The Science of Getting Rich” written in 1911 by a man named Wallace Wattles. The book was the inspiration for “The Secret” a movie all about the law of attraction. Although “The Science of Getting Rich” is about the law of attraction, it never calls it that, even so this book is perhaps the best reference about using the law and putting it into action in your life.

Basically using the law of attraction boils down to setting up a daily cycle in your life.

Steps To Success UsingThe Science of Getting Rich

1. Visualize an outcome – see the result
2. Take note of the ideas that come to mind
3. See the world in the context of this vision
4. Notice new things, create a mindset that appreciates things rather than discounts them
5. Add in these things to your vision and let the vision morph
6. Take action in anyway that you can on these ideas and on your vision
7. Repeat morning and night every day

In The Science of Getting Rich, Wattles states:

“You must form a clear and definite mental picture of what you want; you cannot transmit an idea before you have it yourself. You must have it before you can give it; and many people fail to impress Thinking Substance because they have themselves only a vague and misty concept of the things they want to do, have, or to become.”

If you close your eyes right now can you see a picture of what you want in your life? Can you step into it and feel, smell, and hear? Wattles says: It is not enough that you should have a general desire for wealth “to do good with” everybody has that desire.

The Science of Getting Rich talks about a sensory rich vision as the first step. This is a vision powerful enough to inspire and motivate you to take action to make the vision a reality. How can you have something if you don’t really know what it is. Vague or general ideas are no different from seeing something on TV and then the next day trying to describe the show to a Friend. You have some of it but much of the detail is gone.

Future Vision The Science of Getting Rich Style

In your vision the only way to fill it in is to go through it over and over, perhaps take some notes. Include in your notes how it makes you feel? What do you hear? Who is there with you? Is the scent of sandalwood in the air? Experience it all, put it all down and on successive days fill in the details and intensify the vision. Spend time contemplating this picture.

As you go through the day find moments to bring your vision to mind just long enough to appreciate it and be grateful for it.

Continue this process as the first step of the law of attraction daily cycle.

When the mind is open and expecting a thing held in vision it finds new connections and notices things and ideas related to the thing. If you allow your mind to put these ideas and observations together, it will begin to suggest things for you to do. Things that may or may not seem related to the vision. But these things, when integrated this way, will begin to form and bring to you the object of your future vision.

If you want anything — you must first think it. How can we think of the good things we want if our mind is polluted with all the negativity around. Are you a news junkie? Most of what is in the news and on the news channels is what other people want you to think about something that has happened. You don’t need that to overshadow your life. You need to form clear ideas and visions without the interpretation of others. When you create a future vision you must care for it and nurture it while you are bringing it about by holding the vision.

Some have described how this process works using quantum physics. Others relate it to an intelligence in the universe: that the universe contains a thinking substance that produces in kind after the pure thought held in it. Wallace Wattles, quoted above, is one of those who put forth this theory. I don’t think these two theories exclude each other so just take the one that is easiest on your head and begin to play with future vision.

Hold the vision of what you want in your mind with as pure a thought as you can. Practice this morning and night and write the ideas that spin off, write down the plans that come to mind — then act on these things.

Your vision creates the result, your actions bring it into your hands. This is what Wattles is saying.
