I collected the next two quotes and picked the tittle for this post several months ago. As I flesh the piece out it has taken a somewhat different direction. It is not obvious to me why I should leave these quotes on this article and not move them to a new one and yet, I think they and the title belong here. Pardon my incongruous words and enjoy it anyway.

“God speaks to all of us every hour, if we will only listen.”
–George Washington Carver

Dr. Carver made that statement when asked why he didn’t patent many of his inventions.

Trust yourself – And you won’t be disappointed when vain people let you down.
–Bob Dylan

Do you believe enough in yourself to make a decision and press on? Do you value yourself that much? Society teaches us to always trust others and that is important but the lessons that say: trust yourself – where are they?

Learning to trust yourself is like waking up to the truth.

Fear and uncertainty, if they are pervasive in your life, are simply a lack of trust, a lack of faith in yourself. Taking it further, if you have religious convictions, they are a lack of faith in God (however you perceive God).

You can restore faith and eliminate fear by seeing your outcome. See the end from the beginning (as Denis Waitley so elegantly puts it), see the end and know that you have overcome that problem that may seem to have you down right now. See the end and when you are discouraged buck yourself up with it.

Science tells us that the body experiences the same sensations from an imaginary vision as from the same thing happening in reality. This is why Olympic and other athletes are taught to visualize success – to see the end from the beginning. This causes several things to happen…

First there is real training that happens in the body. Basketball players who see themselves making the shots improve about the same amount as those who actually do the physical practice. Second because this instills belief inside – when problems and situations come up, when obstacles are in your path you are more likely to have the conviction to continue, to look for other ways to the same end than if you just come up against it and have no expectation of success. And third, if you believe (or even if you don’t believe) the law of attraction kicks in and helps you attract that outcome.

So there it is: trust yourself, see the end from the beginning, and keep moving in the direction of your dreams always trusting that the answer for that next challenge is there.

About Denis Waitley And How I Came To Know His Work: I had discovered Napoleon Hill and Robert Collier in the late ’60s, Maxwell Maltz and Earl Nightingale in the early ’70s but while I was intrigued by the information it took “The Psychology of Winning” by Denis Waitley (mid ’80s) to put it in a form that made sense to me. He put it in a more useful form – I must have listened to his tapes 100′s of times. I hear Dr. Waitley’s quotes all the time in my head now.

We think this or that and with a little time and perspective we see that the object sought did not bring happiness but increased stress. Or maybe we see it was the chase that brought happiness or something so simple like a sugar cube.

What brings you happiness? What brings satisfaction? Are the two related?

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. –Albert Schweitzer

We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same. –Anne Frank

Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. Franklin D. Roosevelt

Many people have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose. –Helen Keller

That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest. –Henry David Thoreau

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude. –Denis Waitley

Could it just be that Robbins, Peale, and Waitley are great motivators? That would be too obvious, but you will figure out the answer shortly.

As A Man Thinketh haw a great message for everyone. It was written by James Allen in 1902 and is based on his meditations on Proverbs 23:7. Your mind is like a garden, it will bring forth. If you cultivate it, it will produce good results, results that you want. If you let anything grow then your results will be the same as if you let your garden grow – you will get weeds.

It is important that you cultivate your vital thoughts. This is a law that is fixed you reap what you sew. “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.” There is great insight to be gained from doing your own meditation on that verse.

Circumstances grow out of your thoughts, when you sincerely seek to remedy the problems in your character, which was produced by your thoughts, you will see a rapid improvement in your circumstances. Right thinking draws you to a life of prosperity and achievement. Keep your mind on the things you seek. This is another statement of the law of attraction. The book contains all the elements of the law and it’s study will help you advance in that study.

Allen talks of mental harmony where your mind and thoughts are not torn by competing ideas. When we allow ideas to be planted by others, by media, then we are not being good gardeners and may even become share croppers with others controlling us by the messages we allowed them to implant.

Limiting beliefs plague everyman and as we cultivate our thoughts we need to examine these. Beliefs can both protect us and hold us back. That is why we must understand why we hold our beliefs and should we keep them..

Allen says: “A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.” That is very clear and one of the main themes of the book. Our thoughts bring our environment and our environment becomes a looking glass into our minds. If we cannot make ourselves do the things we think we should do then we need to look deeper in to what is being planted in our subconscious. We have to cultivate the beliefs that will cause us to take action in the ways we want, in the ways that will benefit us.

The answer to the question about what Robbins has in common with Peale, and Waitley is that they were all greatly influenced by “As A Man Thinketh.” Were you looking for a more profound answer? Alright, they were all profoundly influenced by “As A Man Thinketh” as many thousands or millions have been.

Read and listen to “As A Man Thinketh” there is a free downloadable audio and ebook from the links on this site.

“As A Man Thinketh” James Allen is sometimes called “As A Man Thinks.”
