Being rich and acting rich are not always go hand in hand. Nor should they. There is a theory which Wallace D. Wattles wrote in his book, The Science of Getting Rich in 1910 and explained that in order to get rich you must live a certain way.

His belief was simply that you could get rich by believing you were rich in the present moment. In every action, you must express the sense of assurance that you are getting rich to others. According to Wattles, “Words will not be necessary to communicate this feeling to others; they will feel the sense of increase when in your presence, and will be attracted to you again.” Through your tone and personal understanding that you are already rich is enough to convey this message. If you already believe that you are rich, others will receive that feeling.

Once you have conveyed the message that you are rich, others will also believe that they, in turn, can become rich as well. So, Wattles believed that “you [should] give them a use value greater than the cash value you are taking from them.” In as sense, they will inherently understand the concept of increase. Knowledge they can use for themselves, then give to others to become rich as well.

Living a certain way will bring you riches. By spreading your knowledge, you give others the opportunity and feeling of increase. They will go where they need to go to make this a reality for them. This will also bring you benefits you never expected. For example, take this principle and apply it to your business. If you behave as though you are already rich, you set forth a certain persona which people will be attracted to. They will seek repeated seek you out. Further, your contributions will benefit you and others as well.

Throughout your daily activities, it is important to consistently visualize your vision of what you want and your purpose in life.

The Advancing Man

The Advancing Man is the man who lives a certain way. According to Wallace D. Wattles, author of The Science of Getting Rich (1910), the Advancing Man constantly strives to improve his place in life. Whether a man is a professional or a wage earner, he will get rich as long as he applies the same principles to his life.

Wattles believed that man inherently wants more in his life. In order to live a fulfilled life, man must be able to afford that life. Therefore, man must have the money to pay for the instruments that enable to reach the desired lifestyle.

According to Wattles, the Advancing Man gives increase to another’s life. In turn, they will be attracted to him. Therefore, he will get rich. He offered an example of the physician who holds the vision of himself as a great and successful healer. When a physician works and focuses on his vision to heal his patients, they return to him. He has found his purpose and he actively heals his patients.

The vocation is not relevant here. If he can give increase of life to others and give awareness to them, they will become attracted to him When man follows the principles of the certain way: faith, visualization of his goal, and gratitude, he will get rich. However, man must also accompany these principles with personal actions. Otherwise, these steps will simply be futile. Action is required on the part of man. In order for him to become rich, he must exercise what he envisions for himself. As a physician, clergyman, scientist, whatever he sees as his purpose, he must act in that fashion.

The Advancing Man is Advancing Thought into his reality.  As he continues to make his life better, he sets an example to others. He shows them how they can also become rich through his actions. He becomes a living inspiration to others, so they will follow him. They will be attracted to him. Therefore, the Advancing Man will never lack for a following.

There isn’t a sure fire way to becoming rich. Though, many have developed theories on that very idea. In the early 1900s, Wallace D. Wattles wrote, The Science of Getting Rich based on the notion that “thought, in this substance, Produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.” He created a theory stating that man will become rich if he lived and thought a certain way.

Once you visualize your goal, form a mental image, inside your mind, the matter becomes about receiving. Whether you use affirmations, prayer, or any other means of mental communication with the Universe, you must hold your vision in place.

Wattles expressed that you must believe that what you asked for is what you have already received. You must imagine that you are already in that financial situation, living as you want, on your terms. You must visualize this in great detail. In essence, “it is faith and purpose in the use of the imagination which make the difference between the scientist and the dreamer. And having learned this fact, it is here that you must learn the proper use of the Will.”

He was very concerned that man should use his will properly. He should live a certain way which did not include using his will on other people to get rich. He also believed that poverty could be eradicated if others’ became rich. Then they could inspire others to do the same. This would be their duty to man. Wealth creation is not wealth redistribution. Man creates his own wealth by visualization, belief in abilities, setting goals, and gratitude.

To further his utilization of man’s will in a positive way, Wattles insisted the relevance of growing rich through a creative method, not a competitive one. You must focus on yourself, no one else. Otherwise, you will not grow rich.  Remember, “ Thought in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought.” By this, give attention entirely to growing rich. Focus on what you do have, not what you do not.

Throughout time, the rich and the poor have lived side by side. There have been many reasons placed before us as to why this disparity existed. With ever passing generation, there are movements to equalize the socioeconomic gaps that define our society. During the early 1900s, Wallace D. Wattles published a book, The Science of Getting Rich based on his own findings.

He began to use the idea of creative visualization in which he would form a mental picture and work toward the realization of his vision. Before he would publish his books, he would practice his techniques on himself to make sure they were successful. After several experimentations and constant writing, he saw himself as “an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision.” This was his mental picture. The “advancing man” would soon become part of The Secret of Getting Rich.

The Science of Getting Rich is based upon what Wattles called living a “Certain Way.” Essentially, man will become rich if he lives a certain way. But, he must follow the rules exactly. The origin of a “certain way” came from a “mental healing” movement during the 1850s. A man, Phineas P. Quimby had suffered from some physical ailments and found relief through Wattle’s philosophy. Now, people were questioning if the same techniques could be applied to their desires (money, happiness, a bigger home, better health, etc.). This led to Wattle’s creation of “Quimbian” healing strategies to financial and physiological situations.

According to Wattles, man will become rich if he adheres to thinking in a certain way. He explained in depth how living a certain way brings wealth and abundance through positive thoughts. In essence, “Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought upon formless substance, can cause the thing he thinks about to be created.” In his experience, the combination of putting forth the needed effort, visualization, believing in one’s ability, defining goals, and constant gratitude all lead to becoming rich.

While his approach was revolutionary, he wanted to be clear that it was secular in nature. So, he added “science” for clarification. He wrote about prosperity in life, business, mind strategies, the material and spiritual world. Living in a certain way was intended to create a sense of positive thinking, a shift in way we process information, view our world, and react to it.

Can you accept what’s in “The Science of Getting Rich” and just do it? That’s the advise in the preface, just do it, acquire wealth or the thing that you want and then analyze it later if you must. In the mean time keep your thoughts only on the prescribed method which puts the law of attraction into action:

1. Picture the thing you want in the formless substance. See it and make it real.
2. Know that it is yours and be thankful.
3. Maintain the vision, the knowing that it is yours, and do this in gratitude.
4. Be sensitive to your intuition and your thoughts. They may tell you to act in a certain way. Be sure to do so faithfully, gratefully, in certainty. This is the plan offered in “The Science of Getting Rich”.

Notice that action is required. Wattles repeatedly says in the book that you must act in faith on the vision. A way will be made for you to receive but it requires your participation.

Can you be thankful before you actually hold the riches in your hands?

Is there evidence that this process worked for anyone in a way that wasn’t just coincidence? Yes, there is: Conrad Hilton, in his biography, spoke of traveling around Texas, sometimes sleeping on park benches, with an old picture of the Waldorf Astoria. He looked at the picture often and saw it as his. Two years later he was owner of an old hotel in Dallas. But saw himself as owner of the famed Waldorf Astoria another property that he later put into the Hilton portfolio. Can you believe that big? Can you be thankful that it is already yours just by seeing the picture of it? Can you continue to do it through a stock market crash as Hilton did?

An old preacher once linked two verses together for me:

God … calleth those things which be not as though they were. (Romans 4:17)
Be you therefore followers (or imitators) of God, as dear children; (Ephesians 5:1)

Then he said do what God did. To imitate God because that’s what God invites us to do. That old preacher had never read Wattles book but they were saying the same thing, “call things that be not as though they were.” It’s a way to live that is new to most of us, but a way that will set you apart from those who choose to live life in the same old way.

“The Science of Getting Rich” is an interesting book. At one point in my life I would have scoffed past it without paying attention to it’s message. After all the language is somewhat stuffy and the examples are from the turn of the Century but today more powerful examples could be taken than the steel and rail businesses or retail. There are many examples of people from modest means creating companies like Microsoft, Google, and YouTube and making fortunes in practically the wink of an eye. All of that said, you will find no finer discussion of the law of attraction.

Don’t ever wallow in self-pity and think that the last song has been written, that there are no more, or the last industry, or business niche made, or that everything has already been invented. Or likewise that we are running out of oil, copper, gold, or whatever it is. The three software companies mentioned in the last paragraph literally came from sand. There is so much sand. Those industries are based on computer chips which are made from silicon – a principal component in sand. But that’s not quite true either. These companies are software companies. Their products are not physical at all – they are manifestations of the mind – they do not truly exist in the physical world but the fortunes from them do. As you listen to The Science of Getting Rich you will hear Wattles discussing what must have been a stretch to think about in 1910 – an airline industry that people should think about getting into, what insight.

So what are you going to do? See the vision of your life and be thankful that you have it. When the thoughts come act on them. See the vision as big, that way you know it’s from God, or the Universal intelligence, or however you choose to view it. Physics have come up with some good theories about how matter is formed from energy and how thought is energy. Use the model that you feel good about. In reality no one understands exactly what the process is but only that there is a law that attracts those things to us when we hold them in mind and impress them on “The Formless Substance.” Wattles is talking about the law of attraction.

In saying that you must hold your vision while you are doing each act, however trivial or commonplace, I do not mean to say that it is necessary at all times to see the vision distinctly to its smallest details. It should be the work of your leisure hours to use your imagination on the details of your vision, and to contemplate them until they are firmly fixed upon memory. If you wish speedy results, spend practically all your spare time in this practice.

By continuous contemplation you will get the picture of what you want, even to the smallest details, so firmly fixed upon your mind, and so completely transferred to the mind of Formless Substance, that in your working hours you need only to mentally refer to the picture to stimulate your faith and purpose, and cause your best effort to be put forth. Contemplate your picture in your leisure hours until your consciousness is so full of it that you can grasp it instantly. You will become so enthused with its bright promises that the mere thought of it will call forth the strongest energies of your whole being.

Wallace Wattles was one of the first to write about what is known today as The Law of Attraction.  More recently the idea was featured in the move ‘The Secret’ which itself was taken from Wallace Wattles book as well as being inspired by The Teachings of Abraham from Jerry and Ester Hicks.
