Learning to delay gratification can make you happier and more successful in both your personal and professional life. Psychological studies confirm what many traditions have long taught about the power of mental training: a little self-discipline can yield great results!

Here are some of the benefits of waiting for what you want, as well as techniques for becoming more patient.

Benefits of Delaying Gratification

1. Improve your academic and job performance. Studies show that kids who learn to delay gratification get better grades and higher SAT scores. These gains usually continue throughout life, making them more satisfied and successful in their careers as well.

2. Enhance your relationships. As our patience increases, we become less vulnerable to anger and its tendency to drive others away from us. We learn to look at the big picture and take other’s feelings into account.

3. Become more physically fit. Studies also show that those less practiced at delayed gratification, or “low delayers,” tend to have higher body fat. If you appreciate the long term benefits of nutritious food and regular exercise, you’re less likely to overindulge in junk food.

4. Lower your risk of substance abuse. Drug addiction can be one of the most painful consequences of seeking immediate pleasure. Even legal activities like shopping or watching TV can be destructive if we take them to extremes and allow them to crowd out more meaningful endeavors.

5. Enjoy more contentment. Self control enables us to set goals and focus our energies on reaching them. We can make better choices, accomplish more and handle setbacks better.

Techniques for Delaying Gratification

1. Recognize the complexity of your mind. Many mental health experts now speak in terms of interactions rather than fixed personality traits. Try to identify the circumstances where you have trouble resisting temptation rather than labeling yourself as being weak. This can be helpful in making constructive changes in your life.

2. Divert your attention. Just turning your attention away from the cheesecake or the remark you find annoying will instantly make you a little happier and better behaved. The more you learn to control your thinking, the wiser you will become.

3. Take a pause. Pausing for a second can help you avoid reflexive responses that run against your best interests. Decide if it’s more important to see your kids or spend another hour at the office. Take that morning run rather than sleeping for another half hour if the exercise gives you more energy and keeps you healthier.

4. Think ahead. You can live in the moment and still be responsible about planning for the future. Find the balance that works for you.

5. Experiment with visualization. When you’ve fallen in love with a pair of shoes that are too much for your budget, picture them as just a picture lacking any real substance. They’ll be easier to forget.

6. Contemplate impermanence. If such visualizations sound artificial, think about impermanence. Those $400 shoes could get scuffed the first time you wear them, but setting that money aside for retirement could give you a much better future.

7. Seek out good role models. Child psychologists find peer modeling to be a highly effective tool for character education. Whatever your age, pick up some valuable lessons by observing someone whose patience you admire.

8. Reinforce your new habits. Self control grows stronger the more we practice. Have fun finding the strategies that work best for you. Look for daily opportunities to delay gratification, whether it’s a monthly savings plan or transforming those late night snacks into a more nutritious breakfast.

Throughout your life, you’re likely to spend a lot of your time waiting, so you might as well become good at it. Being able to delay gratification is one of the most important qualities you need to reach your goals. Fortunately, this is a skill that improves with practice!

Increase your productivity

Does your productivity ever get hampered by your desire to find the best possible solution? As you seek the easiest or fastest route to your goal, you may find yourself stopped entirely. Sometimes you may even do this on purpose, to keep from having to make a decision.

However, there’s a work-around. Maybe you’ve heard of the term, “heuristic.” Heuristics are rules that allow a solution to be found more quickly. With a heuristic, a resolution can be found even when the entire path isn’t clear from the onset.

For example, if there were no roads, but you lived in New York and wanted to make your way to California, a heuristic might be:

1. Walk west as far as you can.
2. Walk around any obstacle, if possible.
3. If faced with a mountain range, walk toward the space between 2 small peaks.
4. Repeat until reaching California.

Does this heuristic give you the most efficient solution? No; however, it will get you where you want to go, and you won’t waste a lot of time trying to make up your mind.

Try these behavioral heuristics to increase your productivity:

1. Choose the right time. Nearly everyone has times of the day when they are most effective and times when they tend to drag. It’s smart to schedule the most critical tasks for your most effective time of the day.

2. Toss it. If a task doesn’t really need to be done, just get rid of it altogether.

3. Get the bad stuff out of the way. Do the unpleasant items quickly and as early in the day as possible.

4. Set a goal each day (or night). In the morning, decide what you want to accomplish that day. This can be even more effective when planned the night before. Once you have a sense of direction, you can spend all your time getting things done!

5. Eliminate all communication. While you’re working, turn off the phone / cell phone, and don’t check your email. Hang a sign that says, “Do not disturb,” if necessary. You don’t have to do this for all your tasks, but at least do it during the more difficult items.

6. Batch similar tasks together. Do all your emailing at one time. Make all your phone calls at another. Open your snail mail during a set block of time. You’ll waste less time by doing your work in this fashion.

7. Set a timer. Even if a task might take hours, starting will seem easier if you simply give yourself 30 minutes to get as much done as you can. A time limit seems to help many people concentrate and work better, too.

8. Set targets. For example, if you have to make cold-calls for your sales job, tell yourself that you’re not getting up for any reason until you’ve made at least 100 calls. Regardless of what happens, refuse to stop until you hit your target.

9. Use the Pareto Principle. This principle states that 20% of the actions you could take will provide you with 80% of the benefits. So focus on the tasks that will accomplish the most. Unfortunately, these are frequently the tasks that are not enjoyable. You might be surprised how little you really have to do if you focus on the critical 20%.

10. Delegate some of your work. Is there anyone else who can help you? The people around you are resources. When appropriate, use their time and talents wisely to get things done more quickly.

11. Set a deadline. Having a specific endpoint will really help to focus your time and energy. If a task doesn’t feel necessary, chances are that it won’t get done.

12. Increase your speed. It sounds silly, but this can really help. Try doing everything a little faster. Walk faster, talk faster, type faster, and read faster.

Implement these heuristics into your life and you’ll find yourself getting more done in less time. The ultimate secret is to stay on task and not waste any time. These rules will help you do just that.

By Michael Griffin

The Science of Getting Rich is a book written over 100 years ago by a man named Wallace Wattles. In it Wattles lays out the concepts of what we know today as the law of attraction. It is a way of acting, living, and thinking that is guaranteed to create wealth in your life. In spite of the clearly defined principles in the book many have a difficult time putting it all to use.

The law of attraction is a simple concept but it requires a mindset that many find difficult to establish and maintain. What if you had a way to make the practice instinctive, to make it a part of yourself so that you automatically live it by embedding it in such a way that you don’t have to think about it? When you awaken in the morning you go forth with a positive state of mind, a positive expectation, and thankfulness as called for by the law of attraction.

Hypnosis is a technique for influencing your mind by suggestion. Create positive suggestions and build a positive frame of mind. Repeat these suggestions over time and you will move from wherever you are into the frame of mind required to use the law of attraction. You will not only overcome but you will eliminate negative thought patterns that have sabotaged you up to this point. This is the general use of hypnosis.

Next take each of the 17 chapters of The Science of Getting Rich and create specific suggestions to make those chapters come alive in you. Chapter 1 is called “The Right To Be Rich.” It is the perfect place to formulate suggestions to overcome any negative feelings that you might have about money or your right to have a lot of money. Your suggestion might be, “I have a right to be rich, I choose to be wealthy.” You can use this as an affirmation, repeated to yourself in a waking state or you might relax yourself and say it under hypnosis for an even greater effect. Maximum results can be had by using the suggestion under both conditions.

Chapter 2 is called, “There Is A Science of Getting Rich.” In this chapter we learn that getting rich is achieved by doing things in a “certain way.” Our suggestion reinforces this in our mind causing us to embrace the belief and make it our own. And further, we need not have material wealth to achieve wealth; we need only do things in a “certain way.” This becomes real as we reinforce it using affirmations and hypnosis.

So we continue through the book creating affirmations and suggestions for each chapter to make the book a part of our very being so that we don’t just approach it with head knowledge but with a deep understanding because it has become a part of us. Success follows this simple method as you move from chapter to chapter enhancing the words and their effects on your being. You will naturally be happy, naturally be positive, naturally be thankful and this is at the core of applying the law of attraction.

The Science of Getting Rich Hypnosis can be done in this way and you would get all of the benefits but now it has been combined with cutting edge binaural beats to enhance the effect. All of the affirmations and suggestions have been created for you and recorded. You need only listen to gain the benefit. Visit http://www.TheRealMikeGriffin.com and find out all of the details

Although some people seem to have an inherent talent for remembering names, we’re not all that fortunate. However, the good news is you can learn this important social skill.

Dale Carnegie, long known for his approach to business success, formulated an interesting 3-step method for remembering peoples’ names. Step 4, although not Dale Carnegie’s, will also help.

Try these strategies to help you memorize names the first time you meet someone:

1. Immediately start imprinting the person’s name in your mind. Unfortunately, when we first meet someone new, we tend to focus on being polite. However, it’s wise to focus, instead, on the person’s name. Pay close attention to their name and make eye contact with them as you restate it.

* If you don’t catch the name, state something like, “I’m sorry, I didn’t get your name; could you repeat it?” Then, when they say their name, say it back to them to ensure you get it right, like, “Oh, it’s very nice to meet you, Jane Doe.”

2. Repeat the name over and over. After you’ve said the name of the person back to them, repeat it to yourself – “Jane Doe, Jane Doe, Jane Doe.”

* What you’re now doing is applying a basic rule of memory theory – if you want to remember something, repeat it over and over again to impress it into your short-term memory.

* To solidify the name into your memory bank, repeat it to yourself throughout the day, evening and even the next day. Doing so will help you transfer the information into your long-term memory. Think, “Last night, I met Jane Doe and John Smith.”

* When you meet up with another friend at the social event, mention, “I just met Jane Doe; she’s the woman with red hair and blue dress over there.” Any type of repetition of the person’s name will help you remember it later.

3. Connect the name to an image in your mind. This strategy is very powerful. Make a mental picture of the person that will help you remember their name.

* For example, if the person’s name is Rose Brown, imagine her sitting on a brown horse holding a bouquet of roses. Carnegie stressed that the more elaborate and nonsensical your mental picture, the more likely you are to recall the person’s name.

* Of course, there will be times whenever the person’s name is not a common object (like Rose) or color (like Brown). During those times, there is all the more reason to visualize a quirky picture that will help you remember the person’s name.

* For example, if a person’s name is Gloria Armstrong; imagine her singing the hymn, “Gloria” while pumping iron (think “arms strong”). The wackier your mental picture visualizing the person, the more likely it is you’ll remember their name.

4. Use technology. Use your smartphone’s voice recording app to repeat a person’s name and a brief description of their characteristics.

* If you don’t have voice recording capability, type in a quick note of the person’s name, where you met him, and some facts about him.

Whether you decide to use some or all of these steps to remember names, you’ll increase your ability to recall someone’s name later. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how successfully you recall names of people you’ve only briefly met. Strengthen your memory for names by practicing these simple strategies.

law of attraction

Thomas Troward, who was a strong influence in the New Thought Movement, claimed that thought precedes physical form and that “the action of Mind plants that nucleus which, if allowed to grow undisturbed, will eventually attract to itself all the conditions necessary for its manifestation in outward visible form.”In 1906, William Walker Atkinson (1862–1932) used the phrase in his New Thought Movement book Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World, stating that “like attracts like.” The following year, Elizabeth Towne, the editor of The Nautilus Magazine, a Journal of New Thought, published Bruce MacLelland’s prosperity theology book Prosperity Through Thought Force,in which he summarized the principle, stating: “You are what you think, not what you think you are.”The book “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace D. Wattles espouses similar principles — that truly believing in the object of your desire and focusing onto it will lead to that object or goal being realized on the material plane (Wattles indicates in the Preface and later chapters of this book that his premise stems from the monistic Hindu view that God pervades everything and can deliver that which we focus on). In addition, the book also indicates that negative thinking will manifest negative results.

Richard Weiss explains in his book The American Myth of Success that during the New Thought movement, the “principle of “non-resistance” was a popular concept taught in conjunction with the law of attraction.

Do What You Love And You Attract Your Life Purpose. By applying the law of attraction you bring your life into harmony and will bring all good things into your life. We can learn more at Applying The Law Of Attraction Blog.

When you want to attract your dreams into your present day life you can only do it if you have a clear intention of what it is that you really want. This object or goal must be something that you crave and want with all of your heart and soul. You must be able to focus clearly on your life purpose and be able to picture it with clarity and detail in your mind. Some people may not understand what a true life purpose is so let me explain.

Your vision, expectations, and hopes for your life and future are perhaps the best definition of your life purpose that I’ve ever heard.

It has been shown that the Law of Attraction is responsible for all past, present and future events in the lives of everyone in the world. If your life is not all that you hoped it would be, it is the result of your thoughts and negative energy that has attracted those things that you do not want while shielding you from the positive experiences you crave. Look inside your heart and mind and find out if you really believe that you have the right to a wonderful, happy life. If you are not presently enjoying success, riches and love then the answer to the question is “No”, and your current situation is all that you feel you deserve.

Are you envious of others who seem to be living the perfect life? These people are easy to spot because they are full of joy and gladness and it is obvious even to strangers. Individuals like this are delightful to be near and they attract others to them that have the same traits and positive energy that they themselves possess.
