I attended a meeting today and a woman there shared her nightly visualization process:  “Everynight before I go to bed I see my family all smiling and happy.  I see harmony with my co-workers and projects coming to successful completion.  I see my check book with the amount of money I want in it.  I do this as the last thing and it becomes what I dream about.  You can control your dreams by what you think about as you drop off.  Make those thoughts of things you want.”

This is very sound advice in line with the visualization process in Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, and in Wallace Wattles The Science of Getting Rich.  It is a good nightly ritual and twice as effective if you repeat the process when you awaken.

Do these things and you will get to that place “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.”

Think And Grow Rich, Finding The Carnegie Wealth Secret

In the authors preface of “Think And Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill states that the Carnegie Wealth Secret appears at least once in every chapter. It is interesting that different successful people who read the book often come up with different answers of what that secret is. Hill goes on to say:

As a final word of preparation, before you begin the first chapter, may I offer one brief suggestion which may provide a clue by which the Carnegie secret may be recognized? It is this–ALL ACHIEVEMENT, ALL EARNED RICHES, HAVE THEIR BEGINNING IN AN IDEA! If you are ready for the secret, you already possess one half of it, therefore, you will readily recognize the other half the moment it reaches your mind.

Something that you can easily pick up in every chapter, and the answer most given as to what the Carnegie Wealth Secret is: “see yourself,” or “visualize. ” See yourself where you want to be even before you are physically there. Napoleon Hill didn’t make it easy, and yet it is there in plain sight.

Just Where Is The Secret Hidden In Think and Grow Rich

Did you pick visualization or a different answer? Have you read “Think And Grow Rich” and come away scratching your head, wondering what the secret was?

What we find is even those successful people who give an answer other than visualization, when questioned, do in fact perform visualization related to their goals. All of them picked up the idea of a goals list and of reviewing it regularly. Many of them say the secret is “Written Goals.” Written goals are certainly important, but it’s what they do with that goals list that matters. When they review it they begin to see the completion of those goals in their minds. So without exception each one performs visualization.

Most highly successful people see their success in their minds before they see it in reality. The kind of success might be wealth, love, sports, but always the most successful “see it” first.

Dennis Waitley is the author of “The Seeds of Greatness” and many other books. He is also a success coach who has coached Astronauts for NASA and athletes for the US Olympic teams. He talks about visualization too. He points out that athletes who visualize perform significantly better than those who don’t and that it is measurable. It is something that you can see benefits from very soon. Another way he puts it is, “do within while you’re without.” I love that.

The Visualization Process In Think and Grow Rich

In chapters 3 and 4 of think and grow rich Hill lays out  a visualization strategy whereby you read a statement of your definite cheif aim in life.   You read it with emotion morning and night.  This is a most effective method of embedding your desires deep in your subconcious mind and activating the law of attraction.  Here are the recordings of chapter 3:

Think Rich Action Pack

Many look at Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich as a get rich quick guide.  In fact it has been used by the unscrupulous as a part of their sales pitch to pull people into money making schemes and programs that are less than sound.  For many this may have been their first introduction to Hill and his book and that is unfortunate since these people, having been burned by the business, may put the book down forever, and that is unfortunate.

And yet others take the book, regardless of their experience in the business, and take it to heart and are able to put it’s principals to work and achieve something fine, even great.  Years before Think And Grow Rich Hill had his beginnings writing for magazines, and eventually his own magazine: “Hill’s Golden Rule Magazine”  and “Napoleon Hill’s Magazine.”

Napoleon Hill on Concentrated Action

Some of Hill’s earliest writing in these magazines dealt with the lack of concentrated action, moving from one idea or job to the next without ever fully fleshing out the first.  Thus there is no concentrated effort, little action and no success.  Hill is a big proponent of finishing what you start.  Take your idea and stick with it – don’t jump from one thing to the next simply because the first does not pour out dollars when you first take it up.

“Nearly every man has intellegence enough to create ideas in his mind, but the trouble with most is that those ideas never find expression in action.  The finest locomotive on earth is not worth a shilling nor will it pull a single pound of weight, utill the stored up energy in the steam dome is released by the throttle.

You have energy in that head of yours — every human being does — but you are not releasing it at the throttle of action!  You are not applying it through the principal of concentration to the tasks which if completed, would place you on the list of those who are regarded as successes.”  –Napoleon Hill from  Napoleon Hill’s First Editions

This idea of concentrated action is why Hill and so many success authors talk about writing not only goals, but a short list of what you should do the next day.  It keeps you focused, it keeps you in a state of concentration on the ideas, on the goals, it also facilitates visualization which Napoleon Hill covers in detail in Chapters 3 and 4 of Think and Grow Rich.

Napoleon Hill on Persistence

From Chapter 9 of Think and Grow Rich:

PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL.

Will-power and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will-power, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives.

Henry Ford has been generally misunderstood to be ruthless and cold-blooded. This misconception grew out of Ford’s habit of following through in all of his plans with PERSISTENCE.

The majority of people are ready to throw their aims and purposes overboard, and give up at the first sign of opposition or misfortune. A few carry on DESPITE all opposition, until they attain their goal. These few are the Fords, Carnegies, Rockefellers, and Edisons.

Napoleon Hill and Others on Procrastination

This brings us to procrastination.  Procrastination is a form of fear.  Procrastination often results when there is anxiety over something you want to do or need to do.  Wikipedia has this to say:

The psychological causes of procrastination vary greatly, but generally surround issues of anxiety, low sense of self-worth, and a self-defeating mentality^[4]. Procrastinators are also thought to have a lower-than-normal level of conscientiousness, more based on the “dreams and wishes” of perfection or achievement in contrast to a realistic appreciation of their obligations and potential.

Napoleon Hill had this to say about procrastination:

Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday.

Persistent action carried out now.  These ideas are two of  the primary keys to success.  W. Clement Stone had a saying:

“Do it now.”

And why not, why not now?  Do we have genuine reasons or are they procrastination and hidden fear?

Napoleon Hill was writing about periodic self examination when he wrote the first quote above.  That if you are jumping around from one thing to the next then you will never put forth the concentrated effort that you need to really put the thing over.  And if you have a good idea and are not going forward with it – with persistence and with belief in it – then perhaps there is some hidden fear that you need to understand that is causing you to procrastinate.

Napoleon Hill’s writings are timeless and remain some of the foremost success liturature that we have.  That the unscrupulous would use it to manipulate those seeking to better their lives is unfortunate but that should not stop us from taking and using Hills literary works for our betterment.

The Law of Attraction by way of The Science of Getting Rich

Master the law of attraction, what if you could master it?  Did you know The Science of Getting Rich tells you exactly how to attain mastery?  What would mastery mean to you? Can you see yourself as master? Can you step into that vision and feel it? Your beautiful home, the ones you love around, and a knowing that you can advance in the direction of your dreams and overcome anything that might seem to be in the way. You might never have read the Bible but somewhere you heard the words of Jesus: “I tell you with certainty, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ if he doesn’t doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.” And you think that is the place I am in, I do not doubt in my heart and any mountains or problems that seem like mountains move out of my way. You are the master of the law of attraction.

The Science of Getting Rich

In 1910 a rather strange man named Wallace D. Wattles wrote what has become a classic success book: The Science of Getting Rich. This book while always getting a little attention through the years has become hugely popular again since the release of The Secret movie. Rhonda Byrne, the creator of the movie has said that The Science of Getting Rich was a major factor in the movie.

The Science of Getting Rich doesn’t use the words: “law of attraction” anywhere in it – yet in reading the book it is unmistakable that the law of attraction is what it is all about. Hold the vision of the thing you want in the invisible thinking substance that makes up the universe. Profound for 1910, today people discussing the law begin to talk about Physics and discoveries in quantum mechanics. We were perhaps better off with the simpler language which is part of the charm of Wattles book.

Master The Law of Attraction

Hold the vision, see the vision and step into it, experience it. At some point you will learn what to do and you must act. Wattles says: “By thought, the thing you want is brought to you. By action, you receive it.” A lot of people leave out the discussion of the action part when talking about the law of attraction. It is nice to think that all you have to do is dream, and your dreams will see reality. The idea of action says you might have to work at it a little bit too.

Yet it is this very “action” that activates the law of attraction and this is a key part of what wattles focuses on in The Science of Getting Rich. It’s all there in that book, laying in the open, and not “Secret” since 1910. Seth Godin is the hottest marketer today on the planet. If you are in business or otherwise have something to promote you need to listen to him. Here are some of the ideas from his presentation in the TED video:

• People who can spread ideas win.
• The old ways of interruption marketing is over. Consumers have more choices and less time so they just ignore stuff.
• What determines what gets noticed is: is it remarkable? Is it worth talking about? Is it worth making a remark about?
• Sell the people who are listening and maybe they’ll tell their friends.
• Figure out what people want and give it to them.
• The riskiest thing you can do now is to be safe. The safest place is to be on the fringes.

Seth Godin at TED Sliced Bread and Other Marketing Delights

Wikipedia offers this summary of Godin’s views:

First, the end of the “TV-Industrial complex” means that marketers no longer have the power to command the attention of anyone they choose, whenever they choose.

Second, in a marketplace in which consumers have more power, marketers must show more respect; this means no spam, no deceit and a bias for keeping promises.

Finally, Godin asserts that the only way to spread the word about an idea is for that idea to earn the buzz by being remarkable. Godin refers to those who spread these ideas as “Sneezers”, and to the ideas so spread as an “IdeaVirus.” He calls a remarkable product or service a purple cow. Yahoo! currently has a model of a purple cow in the lobby of its Sunnyvale campus.

Advertisements on television and radio are classified as ‘interruption marketing’, which interrupt the customer while he is doing something of his preference.

Godin introduced the concept of “permission marketing” where the business provides something of value to the customer and thus obtains his permission and then does marketing.

Seth Godin’s blog is a treasure. A recent post, Three Things You Need If You Want More Customers is typical of how he boils what seem to be complex marketing issues down to something so simple that it becomes obvious. What a great talent.

Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich stands as the most famous success book of the 20th century. A few weeks back we identified chapters 3 and 4 as pivotal in the book and congruent with “The Science of Getting Rich.” Audio of chapter 3 was published last year and now here is the promised chapter 4.

Napoleon Hill names auto-suggestion as the key-stone of Think And Grow Rich. Auto-suggestion puts instructions from you directly into your subconscious mind and begins a process whereby you will be contacted back by an inspiration from infinite intelligence. An inspiration that will take you to your objective. To the thing which you instructed your subconscious mind to aquire.

Hill recommends reading the chapter every night aloud until you develop faith in the principals it states. Likewise your goal must be repeated and visualized. If you are seeking money you must visualize it until you see, in your mind, the money that you seek. I might add that you can even smell it.

Faith: Visualization of And Belief In Attainment of Desire

Guy Kawasaki is one of the huge success stories from the ranks of Apple Computer. In this presentation you will learn some great ideas for marketing. This has everything to do with The Science of Getting Rich, you have to be able to share your vision in order to make it happen. This is part of the ‘Action’ that Wallace Wattles insists on.

A big part of successfully putting a software product in the market is generating a big buzz – in other words evangelism. It’s also called: USP – Unique Selling Proposition – a necessary part of doing business because usually if you ‘build a better mousetrap’ they won’t beat the path to your door. The won’t unless you do what Guy is talking about — evangelize it.

I’d love to be able to sit home and ‘Ohmmmmm’ (replace that with your mantra of choice) my way to success. Make no mistake it’s an important component – getting your head in the game. The visualization – holding the thought in the ‘thinking substance’ it all works together to bring your success. But you need the action part too. Napoleon Hill deals more with it in Think and Grow Rich. Charles Schwab evangelized a group of Eastern bankers and brought US Steel into being (chapter 3). You can listen to the story here:

The idea was born to Schwab but if he hadn’t evangelized it there may have been no U.S. Steel, perhaps the Carnegie foundation wouldn’t be so well endowed, perhaps there wouldn’t have been so many Carnegie libraries around. This idea not only made Schwab, J.P. Morgan, and the investors a lot of money. It also increased Carnegie’s wealth. Without the libraries and the good works of the foundation, what might not have happened? Would we be missing something that benefited us. Who can measure the far reaching impact of that speech – that evangelization?

Evangelism is not a religious word but rather a word from the Greek meaning bring the good news. This is a video about marketing, about selling a product and providing value in the marketplace.
