Learning to delay gratification can make you happier and more successful in both your personal and professional life. Psychological studies confirm what many traditions have long taught about the power of mental training: a little self-discipline can yield great results!

Here are some of the benefits of waiting for what you want, as well as techniques for becoming more patient.

Benefits of Delaying Gratification

1. Improve your academic and job performance. Studies show that kids who learn to delay gratification get better grades and higher SAT scores. These gains usually continue throughout life, making them more satisfied and successful in their careers as well.

2. Enhance your relationships. As our patience increases, we become less vulnerable to anger and its tendency to drive others away from us. We learn to look at the big picture and take other’s feelings into account.

3. Become more physically fit. Studies also show that those less practiced at delayed gratification, or “low delayers,” tend to have higher body fat. If you appreciate the long term benefits of nutritious food and regular exercise, you’re less likely to overindulge in junk food.

4. Lower your risk of substance abuse. Drug addiction can be one of the most painful consequences of seeking immediate pleasure. Even legal activities like shopping or watching TV can be destructive if we take them to extremes and allow them to crowd out more meaningful endeavors.

5. Enjoy more contentment. Self control enables us to set goals and focus our energies on reaching them. We can make better choices, accomplish more and handle setbacks better.

Techniques for Delaying Gratification

1. Recognize the complexity of your mind. Many mental health experts now speak in terms of interactions rather than fixed personality traits. Try to identify the circumstances where you have trouble resisting temptation rather than labeling yourself as being weak. This can be helpful in making constructive changes in your life.

2. Divert your attention. Just turning your attention away from the cheesecake or the remark you find annoying will instantly make you a little happier and better behaved. The more you learn to control your thinking, the wiser you will become.

3. Take a pause. Pausing for a second can help you avoid reflexive responses that run against your best interests. Decide if it’s more important to see your kids or spend another hour at the office. Take that morning run rather than sleeping for another half hour if the exercise gives you more energy and keeps you healthier.

4. Think ahead. You can live in the moment and still be responsible about planning for the future. Find the balance that works for you.

5. Experiment with visualization. When you’ve fallen in love with a pair of shoes that are too much for your budget, picture them as just a picture lacking any real substance. They’ll be easier to forget.

6. Contemplate impermanence. If such visualizations sound artificial, think about impermanence. Those $400 shoes could get scuffed the first time you wear them, but setting that money aside for retirement could give you a much better future.

7. Seek out good role models. Child psychologists find peer modeling to be a highly effective tool for character education. Whatever your age, pick up some valuable lessons by observing someone whose patience you admire.

8. Reinforce your new habits. Self control grows stronger the more we practice. Have fun finding the strategies that work best for you. Look for daily opportunities to delay gratification, whether it’s a monthly savings plan or transforming those late night snacks into a more nutritious breakfast.

Throughout your life, you’re likely to spend a lot of your time waiting, so you might as well become good at it. Being able to delay gratification is one of the most important qualities you need to reach your goals. Fortunately, this is a skill that improves with practice!

Do you count on financial advisors to guide you with wise advice for your personal money matters? Giving that sort of control to someone can understandably be scary.

To feel more confident in your decision, you’ll want to know that your advisor is qualified and working in your best interests.

While recognizing these issues with complete certainty may be challenging, there are some red flags that you should watch for. If research into your advisor uncovers one of these warning signs, it might be time to find someone else, or at least to start asking tougher questions.

Here are some of the key warning signs:

1. Absence of credentials. Everyone wants to believe that their financial expert is proficient and experienced. One sign that this may not be the case is an absence of professional certifications, such as CFP, CFA, CPA or ChFC designation.

* Take the time to learn more about these designations and exactly what your advisor had to do to earn them.

* If you only want tax advice, a certified public accountant (CPA) might be the best way to proceed. For investment advice, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) is most likely a better choice. If you need a complete financial plan, a CFA, certified financial planner (CFP), or chartered financial consultant (ChFC) will probably be best.

2. Lack of Time. If your financial advisor can’t make the time to have a minimum of one thorough meeting each year, you may have a serious challenge. When it comes to getting financial advice, you and your goals are all that matters.

* Things can change over time; a financial advisor must be updated if he’s going to be effective. If your advisor doesn’t have time to meet, does he really have enough time to do all the other things he should be doing?

3. Poor Communication Skills. If your financial advisor really knows her stuff, she should be able to explain financial concepts and strategies with relative ease. If you can’t understand her explanation, perhaps she just doesn’t understand well enough to explain the concepts to you.

4. Over-Promising. Promises of significant returns should raise a red flag. An advisor can talk about possible returns provided they don’t make any guarantees. While confidence is great, honesty is even better. Big promises can mean a potential scam or that a financial advisor that is less than honest.

5. A lack of real transparency. Your advisor should always be forthcoming about the types of investments and the fees and commissions involved. People in these professions can earn significant commissions if they push certain products. Are those products in your best interest?

* Request to see all the fees that you’re being charged for any applicable transactions, and ask about the commissions. Ethically, advisors should do what’s in the client’s best interest.

6. Excessive selling. If your advisor is attempting to sell you on a complicated option deal that you’re struggling to understand, is it really right for you?

* The financial plan an advisor follows should be tailored to your goals and your level of comfort. Don’t allow your advisor to push you into something that’s not right for you. If he’s following the plan he laid out for you from the beginning, he shouldn’t have to talk you into much.

7. Disorganized. A lot of record keeping goes along with being a financial advisor. If your advisor isn’t organized, then he should be able to hire someone that is. This is your money we’re talking about. You need those records for the IRS, at a minimum!

None of these warning signs is necessarily a deal breaker, but they are definitely things to watch out for. Most importantly, be sure you feel confident and comfortable with your advisor. Remember that we’re talking about your money here, so keep your eye on it!

How do we want to feel? Any ideas? I hope you have some ideas … because, you see, it’s the two of us who are going to create that… Now we are right this minute in the process of creating tomorrow.”

With that, Walsch sums up reality, that you create and are responsible for your own tomorrow.

On his website, here is how Neal Donald Walsch descibes himself:

Neale Donald Walsch

Neale Donald Walsch is a modern day spiritual messenger whose words continue to touch the world in profound ways. With an early interest in religion and a deeply felt connection to spirituality, Neale spent the majority of his life thriving professionally, yet searching for spiritual meaning before beginning his now famous conversation with God.

His With God series of books has been translated into 37 languages, touching millions of lives and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives. In addition to authoring the renowned With God series, Neale has published 16 other works, as well as a number of video and audio programs. Available throughout the world, each of the CwG dialogue books has made the New York Times Bestseller list, Conversations with God-Book 1 occupying that list for over two and half years.

The With God Series has redefined God and shifted spiritual paradigms around the globe. In order to deal with the enormous response to his writings, Neale created the Conversations with God Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to inspiring the world to help itself move from violence to peace, from confusion to clarity, and from anger to love.

At Amazon.com I found this about Conversations With God.

But Walsch is no prophet, and neither is he a new messiah of a new religion. It all began when Walsch, simply a frustrated man, sat down one day with a pen in his hand and some tough questions in his heart. As he wrote his questions to God, he realized God was answering him—directly—through the pen in his hand. The result was Conversations with God, An Uncommon Dialogue—matter-of-fact, in-your-face wisdom for readers on how to live day to day while remaining true to themselves and their spiritualities. In this expanded edition with new material, Walsch records his discussions with God about time, space, politics—and even kinky sex.

It is a contemporary discussion that honestly—and often humorously—explores life’s critical issues and offers suggestions about how the reader’s world can become a much better place when one’s mind is open to having personal conversations with God.

Flying Saucers Serious Business by Frank Edwards was a book that I read when it came out in 1966, I had just started high school. The Drugest across the street from where I lived, Brooks Carver, had known Frank Edwards and had a number of signed paper backs for sale in his store. I got one. A few days later Frank Edwards was on the Metz program which was called: Juniper-5-2385. This was also the dial in number.

I stood out in a phone booth near where we lived with a transistor radio to call in and I did get through. I’m certain my question was amazing but I don’t recall what it was but I did speak to Milton Metz and Frank Edwards that night in 1966 and I was very serious about Flying Saucers.

Law Of Attraction

All people are surrounded by a thought atmosphere. . . Through this force we’re either
drawing in or forcing back. Like draws in like and…we draw in exactly what we
are in mind.

The law of attraction, or what I refer to as resonance manifestation, is the principle by
which you draw into your life that which is in vibrational alignment with your
awareness; your thoughts, feelings, opinions and attitudes, whether you’re
mindful of them or not.

This is why the starting point on the road to successfully and deliberately manifesting
your desires is to become aware of the thoughts and feelings that are producing
your experience and to take responsibility for your reality.

Accepting responsibility for your life without judgment is both empowering and liberating. When you understand that you’re source not subject of your existence, you are able to
modify it.

Further more, when you realize that you’re always backed up by an all-loving,
intelligent universe that you’re ever united with, you’ll be able to allow and
engage co-creation where synchronicities and serendipities burst, “hows” are magically taken care of and issues in your life seamlessly woven into a tapestry of dreams come true.

The law of attraction is the power of like attracting like and the means by which you
magnetically materialize that which you center your attention upon and are in
energetic balance with.

To apply the law of attraction successfully you will be required to become conscious of
what‘s happening inside. You need to be aware of the thoughts, feelings,
beliefs and attitudes that are what’s creating the boundaries of your
experience.

You’re a marvelous manifesting machine producing your reality in every moment. It is not
possible to not create. The trick is to become aware of how you do so. For
this, realizing the nature of reality, the law of attraction and the “greater
picture” around manifestation is of value.

The law of attraction is an absolute. It doesn’t single out, it simply is. This implies it
can work both for and versus you. To draw in what you want into your life you
need to line up your heart and mind to the final result of your wishes, the
juicy positive ideas and beliefs which palpably resonate and act as a magnet to
those very goals.

In my exploration of manifesting and the law of attraction I have identified some key insights that have aided me to understand its nature and workings and engage it entirely in my favor. A few of these will be explored on this blog.

The Science of Getting Rich Hypnosis is a product by John Vincent that will incorporate the principals of The Science of Getting Rich into your mind using binaural beats and hypnosis. You will have the principals ingrained within instead of just hearing them and being able to talk about them. They will become a part of what you are, they will become a part of your being so you can begin to live them in a way you have not experienced before.

To have your dream life you need to stop dreaming and get a clear vision of what that life is

It may seem like an easy thing to ask people ‘what they want’ but if you ask someone “what do you want to do? Where are you going to be this time next year?” most people don’t know. Or they have an “achievable” plan that’s not really what they want. It is true that people limit themselves by negative thoughts on what is ‘realistic’. Then they don’t have real enthusiasm for that plan because it’s not really what they want.

To have all that you want, you need to be sure what it is you DO want? Leaving your future to chance and ‘whatever happens’ is giving away your power to be all that you can be.

Having a Clear Vision is step one.

To have your dream life you need to stop dreaming and get a clear vision of what that life is. Once you have a vision and a clear idea of what you really want, you can then make plans to achieve it. You can work towards it with a clear, focused idea of what you are heading towards.

If you were planning a car journey you would know your destination. You would know your start point and you would plan your route. Then you can estimate the duration and plan your schedule. If it was a long journey, you might also plan in some rest stops and have activities planned for the family to make it fun!

It’s ok if there are diversions on route, if the road is blocked you can take a detour. If you never leave home though, if you never get in the car, you will never get there.

Its time to get really clear on step one, its time to clarify your vision. You need to know what you want and what you are going to give in exchange for it. Once you are clear on what you are going to offer the world in exchange for riches you can begin to create value for people.

If a hot shot guru persuaded you to pay $97 on a 16 page book that would ask the right questions and give you the focus to clarify your vision, you would invest the time to answer those questions and take that step.

Well, NLP Master Practitioner, Trainer and Hypnotist, John Vincent, has created an excellent guide for clarifying your vision and he is giving it to you as a gift for free. It is now up to you to decide to invest time in your self.

Steve Jobs has died, here is how I introduced the video for Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford University Commencement speech in a post over 2 years ago:

Steve Job’s passion helped launch Apple Computer into it’s premier spot in the PC industry in the late 70′s early 80′s. His firing from Apple saw the company fall from it’s great heights – it’s soul having been removed. His return to Apple saw it’s fortunes change and today it has again risen to a place of technological leadership.

The speech comes highly recommended and you can see it here: Steve Jobs Commencement. In the speech he talks about the diagnosis of the illness which has now killed him (pancreatic cancer) and how it caused him to change his life. There is much great wisdom here.

Jobs died yesterday and has left a technological void in the world. Steve Jobs was not just the technological soul of Apple but of our generation. As we think about Steve Jobs death we should consider what innovations died with him. RIP Steve Jobs.

Wired magazine produced a tribute video to Jobs:

CNN has a great piece about Jobs and his ability to inspire:

Steve Jobs

Dozens of video-capable smartphones — most of them Steve Jobs’ own creations — peered out over the sea of technology journalists like digital periscopes.Nothing particularly video-worthy was going on in that moment: It was January 2010, and a bunch of us tech writers, wearing plaid and skinny jeans and funny hats, were waiting in line outside the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco for an Apple news conference.

But a line outside a news conference where Steve Jobs will appear is no normal line. It’s the kind of thing you might just want to record every second of. And so, when our media handlers, wearing bright T-shirts with the simple Apple logo, let us into the building where Jobs would unveil his company’s “magical” iPad, pretty much everyone in the audience raised his or her iPhone in unison and clicked “record.”

I’m sure our collective scramble down a hall toward a dimly lit auditorium was recorded and uploaded dozens of times.

Apple’s revolutionary co-founder, who died Wednesday at the age of 56, had that kind of power over people — even the ostensibly objective technology press corps, which breathlessly hangs on Apple’s announcements as if their gadgets have the power to change the world.

“So much talk on Twitter of Steve Jobs, but Twitter HQ has been eerily quiet the past few hours save the clicking of keyboards he tailored,” Twitter designer Mark Trammell posted on his popular Twitter feed. All around the world, it seems, people used the technology Jobs created to remark on his impact and his passing — a testament to the personal impact Apple’s suite of iProducts has on many of our lives.

Regardless of your technological tack — whether you’re addicted to that red light that blinks on top of the BlackBerry or swear your allegiance to the Android overlords — it’s hard to deny the industry-changing power of Jobs and the Apple brand. Before the iPhone, an app-running, touch-screen device didn’t exist. It was the first true smartphone, just as the iPad was the first true tablet computer. But way before that, back in a California garage in the 1970s, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak essentially kick-started the personal computer revolution. In part, I owe the fact that I’m able to type this story and send it to you over the Internet to the vision of Jobs and Wozniak.

If the technological history explains part of the hype that surrounds every press conference Jobs presided over, his personal life tells more of the story.

The Secret Of The Ages

You say big corporations scheme
To keep a fellow down;
They drive him, shame him, starve him, too,
If he so much as frown.
God knows I hold no brief for them;
Still, come with me to-day
And watch those fat directors meet,
For this is what they say:
“In all our force not one to take
The new work that we plan!
In all the thousand men we’ve hired
Where shall we find a man?”
—St. Clair Adams. *You’ve often heard it said that a man is worth $2 a day from the neck down. How much he’s worth from the neck up depends upon how much he is able to SEE.”Without vision the people perish” did not refer to good eyesight. It wasp. 192

the eyes of the mind that counted in days of old just as they do today. Without them you are just so much power “on the hoof,” to be driven as a horse or an ox is driven. And you are worth only a little more than they.

But given vision—imagination—the ability to visualize conditions and things a month or a year ahead; given the eyes of the mind—there’s no limit to your value or to your capabilities.

The locomotive, the steamboat, the automobile, the aeroplane—all existed complete in the imagination of some man before ever they became facts. The wealthy men, the big men, the successful men, visioned their successes in their minds’ eyes before ever they won them from the world.

From the beginning of time, nothing has ever taken on material shape without

p. 193

first being visualized in mind. The only difference between the sculptor and the mason is in the mental image behind their work. Rodin employed masons to hew his blocks of marble into the general shape of the figure he was about to form. That was mere mechanical labor. Then Rodin took it in hand and from that rough hewn piece of stone there sprang the wondrous figure of “The Thinker.” That was art!

The difference was all in the imagination behind the hands that wielded mallet and chisel. After Rodin had formed his masterpiece, ordinary workmen copied it by the thousands. Rodin’s work brought fabulous sums. The copies brought day wages. Conceiving ideas—creating something—is what pays, in sculpture as in all else. Mere hand-work is worth only hand wages.

p. 194

“The imagination,” says Glenn Clark in “The Soul’s Sincere Desire,” “is of all qualities in man the most God-like—that which associates him most closely with God. The first mention we read of man in the Bible is where he is spoken of as an ‘image.’ ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’ The only place where an image can be conceived is in the imagination. Thus man, the highest creation of God, was a creation of God’s imagination.

“The source and center of all man’s creative power—the power that above all others lifts him above the level of brute creation, and that gives him dominion, is his power of making images, or the power of the imagination. There are some who have always thought that the imagination was something which makes-believe that which is not. This is fancy

p. 195

[paragraph continues] —not imagination. Fancy would convert that which is real into pretense and sham; imagination enables one to see through the appearance of a thing to what it really is.”

There is a very real law of cause and effect which makes the dream of the dreamer come true. It is the law of visualization—the law that calls into being in this outer material world everything that is real in the inner world. Imagination pictures the thing you desire. VISION idealizes it. It reaches beyond the thing that is, into the conception of what can be. Imagination gives you the picture. Vision gives you the impulse to make the picture your own.

Make your mental image clear enough, picture it vividly in every detail, and the Genie-of-your-Mind will speedily bring it into being as an everyday reality.

p. 196

That law holds true of everything in life. There is nothing you can rightfully desire that cannot be brought into being through visualization.

Suppose there’s a position you want the general managership of your Company. See yourself—just as you are now—sitting in the general manager’s chair. See your name on his door. See yourself handling his affairs as you would handle them. Get that picture impressed upon your subconscious mind. See it! Believe it! The Genie-of-your-Mind will find the way to make it come true.

The keynote of successful visualization is this: See things as you would have them be instead of as they are. Close your eyes and make clear mental pictures. Make them look and act just as they would in real life. In short, day dream—but day dream with a purpose. Concentrate

p. 197

on the one idea to the exclusion of all others, and continue to concentrate on that one idea until it has been accomplished.

Do you want an automobile? A home? A factory? They can all be won in the same way. They are in their essence all of them ideas of mind, and if you will but build them up in your own mind first, stone by stone, complete in every detail, you will find that the Genie-of-your-Mind can build them up similarly in the material world.

“The building of a trans-continental railroad from a mental picture,” says C. W. Chamberlain in “The Uncommon Sense of Applied Psychology,” “gives the average individual an idea that it is a big job. The fact of the matter is, the achievement, as well as the perfect mental picture, is made up of millions of little

p. 198

jobs, each fitting in its proper place and helping to make up the whole.

“A skyscraper is built from individual bricks, the laying of each brick being a single job which must be completed before the next brick can be laid.”

It is the same with any work, any study. To quote Professor James:

“As we become permanent drunkards by so many separate drinks, so we become saints in the moral, and authorities and experts in the practical and scientific spheres, by so many separate acts and hours of working. Let no youth have any anxiety about the upshot of his education whatever the line of it may be. If he keep faithfully busy each hour of the working day he may safely leave the final result to itself. He can with perfect certainty count on waking some fine morning, to find himself one of the competent

p. 199

ones of his generation, in whatever pursuit he may have singled out.…Young people should know this truth in advance. The ignorance of it has probably engendered more discouragement and faintheartedness in youths embarking on arduous careers than all other causes taken together.”

Remember that the only limit to your capabilities is the one you place upon them. There is no law of limitation. The only law is of supply. Through your subconscious mind you can draw upon universal supply for anything you wish. The ideas of Universal Mind are as countless as the sands on the seashore. Use them. And use them lavishly, just as they are given. There is a little poem by Jessie B. Rittenhouse * that so well describes

p. 200

the limitations that most of us put upon ourselves that I quote it here:

“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.

. . . . . .

“For Life is a just employer;
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

“I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have paid.”

Aim high! If you miss the moon, you may hit a star. Everyone admits that this world and all the vast firmament must have been thought into shape from the formless void by some Universal Mind. That same Universal Mind rules today, and it has given to each form of life power

p. 201

to attract to itself whatever it needs for its perfect growth. The tree, the plant, the animal—each one finds its need.

You are an intelligent, reasoning creature. Your mind is part of Universal Mind. And you have power to say what you require for perfect growth. Don’t be a niggard with yourself. Don’t sell yourself for a penny. Whatever price you set upon yourself, life will give. So aim high. Demand much! Make a clear, distinct mental image of what it is you want. Hold it in your thought. Visualize it, see it, believe it! The ways and means of satisfying that desire will follow. For supply always comes on the heels of demand.

It is by doing this that you take your fate out of the hands of chance. It is in this way that you control the experiences you are to have in life. But be sure to

p. 202

visualize only what you want. The law works both ways. If you visualize your worries and your fears, you will make them real. Control your thought and you will control circumstances. Conditions will be what you make them.

Most of us are like factories where two-thirds of the machines are idle, where the workmen move around in a listless, dispirited sort of way, doing only the tenth part of what they could do if the head of the plant were watching and directing them. Instead of that, he is off idly dreaming or waiting for something to turn up. What he needs is someone to point out to him his listless workmen and idle machines, and show him how to put each one to working full time and overtime.

And that is what YOU need, too. You are working at only a tenth of your

p. 203

capacity. You are doing only a tenth of what you are capable of. The time you spend idly wishing or worrying can be used in so directing your subconscious mind that it will bring you anything of good you may desire.

Philip of Macedon, Alexander’s father, perfected the “phalanx”—a triangular formation which enabled him to center the whole weight of his attack on one point in the opposing line. It drove through everything opposed to it. In that day and age it was invincible. And the idea is just as invincible today.

Keep the one thought in mind, SEE it being carried out step by step, and you can knit any group of workers into one homogeneous whole, all centered on the one idea. You can accomplish any one thing. You can put across any definite idea. Keep that mental picture ever in

p. 204

mind and you will make it as invincible as was Alexander’s phalanx of old.

“It is not the guns or armament
Or the money they can pay,
It’s the close cooperation
That makes them win the day.
It is not the individual
Or the army as a whole
But the everlasting team work
of every bloomin’ soul.”
—J. Mason Knox.

The error of the ages is the tendency mankind has always shown to limit the power of Mind, or its willingness to help in time of need.

“Know ye not,” said Paul, “that ye are the temples of the Living God?”

No—most of us do not know it. Or at least, if we do, we are like the Indian family out on the Cherokee reservation. Oil had been found on their land and money poured in upon them. More money

p. 205

than they had ever known was in the world. Someone persuaded them to build a great house, to have it beautifully furnished, richly decorated. The house when finished was one of the show places of that locality. But the Indians, while very proud of their showy house, continued to live in their old sod shack!

So it is with many of us. We may know that we are “temples of the Living God.” We may even be proud of that fact. But we never take advantage of it to dwell in that temple, to proclaim our dominion over things and conditions. We never avail ourselves of the power that is ours.

The great Prophets of old had the forward look. Theirs was the era of hope and expectation. They looked for the time when the revelation should come that was to make men “sons of God.”

p. 206

[paragraph continues] “They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

Jesus came to fulfill that revelation. “Ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”

The world has turned in vain to matter and materialistic philosophy for deliverance from its woes. In the future the only march of actual progress will be in the mental realm, and this progress will not be in the way of human speculation and theorizing, but in the actual demonstration of the Universal, Infinite Mind.

The world stands today within the vestibule of the vast realm of divine intelligence, wherein is found the transcendent, practical power of Mind over all things.

“What eye never saw, nor ear ever heard,
What never entered the mind of man—
Even all that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

What are your daily rituals? What are the things you do everyday to get your life working? Rituals are important because they happen all the time and have a cumulative effect. A little now, a little tomorrow and soon it all adds up to massive gains. This is true whether in success or for execrcise.

Everyone can benefit from daily exercise. Any new habit may have challenging beginnings, but in time, nearly anything can become habitual. In this case, we’re talking about a habit that has incredible benefits, so let’s see what you can do to get exercising every day!

1. Schedule it. The number one reason people claim they don’t exercise regularly is a lack of time. You make time for a variety of other things every day: eating meals, taking a shower, driving to and from work, television, and more. So make an appointment with yourself to get the exercise your body needs to be as healthy as it can possibly be.

2. Find a workout buddy. The number two reason people don’t exercise is boredom or loneliness. Get out there with a good friend or your significant other. It’s a good time to spend with others and can definitely make things a lot more enjoyable.

* A workout partner will also make you feel a greater sense of responsibility; no one likes to let other people down. It’s a little easier to think, “I’ll do it tomorrow,” when we know there isn’t someone depending on us.

3. Change it up. Come up with a variety of activities. There’s no reason you can’t swim one day, walk the next, and play some basketball the day after that. So think about everything the world has to offer and keep yourself entertained as well. Joining a sports league could take care of a lot of your exercise needs.

4. Take it easy. Perhaps you remember high school and the 5-minute mile you used to run on the track team too well. If you haven’t been active lately, a little reality will serve you better. As long as you’re getting comfortably tired by the end of your workout, you’re on the right track.

* You don’t need to finish your workout on the ground in a breathless heap. High-intensity exercise is great for conditioning, but isn’t any better for your health than less intense options.

5. Make it easy to exercise. Driving halfway across town in rush hour traffic is enough for anyone to find an excuse to skip a day. The truth is that a health club really isn’t necessary. A simple set of weights, a jump rope, or some running shoes are probably all you really need. You may have a basketball court in your driveway and a tennis court down at the park.

* People in the military get into great shape with little more than calisthenics and running. Make it easy enough to exercise that you don’t have a good excuse not to head out the door.

6. Track your progress. It’s a lot easier to stay interested and motivated when you can see some real progress. Fortunately, progress comes quickly at the beginning of any exercise program. So devise a test of your fitness that you can do occasionally. It can be simple, like how many pushups you can do, or how long it takes you to walk a mile.

Exercising daily is a great addition to include your life. It can be challenging to get into the habit, but relatively easy to stick with it after the initial period has passed. Get out there with a friend and have some fun every day! You’ll be healthier, feel better, and look better. Good luck!
