When Life Hands You A Lemon

March 6th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Other

Dale Carnegie said it, “when life hands you a lemon, make lemonade. Here is a short movie about a number of people who found something better after being laid off.

Don’t be the person out there looking for a job, be the person out there doing something interesting (from the movie).

A great little movie about the enormous opportunity that you have by being laid off – an opportunity you have to seize.

    Hey there!
I’m the person that said the “don’t be the person out there looking for a job, be the person doing something interesting.” Glad the comment hit home with you — it truly changed my life. When I found myself without a job right in the midst of the economic collapse, I went almost an entire month just “looking for a job”. It was horrid. Then I just started doing projects for people. Things that were a risk. Could have been a “waste of time”. Hah! I gave away everything I had — to non-profits, to start-ups, to other people in advertising who had lost their jobs. I gave away ideas, strategies, ads, design.
And guess what happened? People started saying “hey, I like your ideas, let me pay you for those.” Honestly. I never would have believed it if it hadn’t happened. I had just been hoping to develop “case studies” for myself — and I never even had to do that. I became a living, breathing case study for myself — and *other* people promoted me. I never had to sell myself again.
Good luck — feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn, Twitter, or anywhere. I still give away everything. I’m still doing stuff that’s interesting. In fact, life couldn’t be more interesting. Lemons? Hah!

    Lisa,

I love your comment, thank you.

Your stories (in the movie) are all inspiring and your comment about being “…the person out there doing something interesting” is truly an inspiration. Each of us should ask ourselves “what have we done interesting today.” It is too easy to drop into the mundane zone if we let our guard drop.

    Mike

P.S. Your blog looks like a great resource for work from home opportunities and tools.
